On Location!

It's just what your story needs - an exotic setting, right? Make it in Santorini or Minsk or Shanghai or New York to really make it shine. You've never been there, but you're writing for some more excitement. That's why you picked Action/Adventure!

First things first. You might be able to do a lot of research from your computer, but it will only get you so far. Not that it isn't a good start; online resources can be full of information to make your story seem real. You can probably make many people think it's enough to be the actual place, but people who visited or lived there will probably see right through your facade. That's exactly what you don't want.

But you don't have the extra cash to go jet-setting to every location on your list? Living in the area gives the writer the most to work with, but there are other options for those of us unable to pick up and leave our day jobs. The local library will give some information, and it may or may not be different than you can find from your favorite coffee shop wifi connection. You might be surprised what your research librarian can come up with when you ask. The next best thing is always to find someone who lived there or has visited frequently.

The realism of setting brings your characters together with the plot, but only if it's the correct details. Residents who can point out flaws are sure to leave your book or story unread. Or you can bring your readers to new places and make it as real as the street they reside on.

If all of these are unavailable, you might want to re-examine the places you do know. There's no reason you can't have an adventure in Hicksville. You'll just have to stretch your writer skills to make it happen.
