Using Groups: Think Outside the Box!

Did you know there's a group on Writing.com for just about anyone? And if you can't find a group on a particular topic, it's easy to start your own! In a previous newsletter ("Noticing Newbies Newsletter (March 31, 2010)), I told you about some of the critique groups on WDC. However, that's not the only way groups can be used. A quick search turns up groups based on the following:

*Note* Common Interest- photography, art, music, etc
*Note* Common Demographic- seniors, artists, veterans, etc
*Note* Common Genre- children's writing, poetry, speculative fiction, etc.
*Note* Common Goals- publishing, self-publishing, completing NaNo, etc.

Some groups are meant for work (like Let's Publish!) but others can be relaxing diversions from everyday life and tools for procrastination!

In addition to gathering members with common interests, groups can be used in a variety of creative ways. I use a group item (with myself as the only member) as a bank for saving GP's toward my upgrade. One can also use a group to hold judges for their contest. Group owners are able to e-mail the entire group, making it the ideal way to send newsletters out to subscribers.

I urge you to take a look at the "Groups" type under the WDC search box. You might be pleasantly surprised at what you see!

What if you don't find a group on the topic you want? Then why not start one! Groups are hard work, but can be rewarding. Nothing is better than a group of Writing.com members working toward a common goal, whether that be publication, raising awareness for an issue, or just having fun.
