Letter from the editor

I'm a fiction writer? Since when?

When I first started out writing seriously, I considered myself a poet only. Fiction writing always intimidated me. Although I took classes on writing for children and teens in grad school, I never really considered myself schooled in writing short stories or novels. Now, at age 26, I seem to be writing nothing but short stories, both for teens and adults. What has changed?

One of the biggest things that's changed in the past few months is that I joined the group Let's Publish! here on WDC. I was instantly exposed to short stories in a variety of genres that I had never read before. I read them and wanted to write things like them. I started searching Duotrope.com for themed anthologies and wrote short stories based on their themes. I had a few of them published. And now, here I am, a published short story writer!

I've also participated in NaNoWriMo three times. NaNoWriMo is a fantastic way to introduce non-novelists to the art of writing a novel. It forced me to learn how to discipline myself, and as a result I wrote my second complete full-length novel. (The other had been under similar pressure, for my MFA thesis.)

I truly believe that a writer should try as many genres and subjects as he/she can manage. I still write poetry, but it's not as rewarding for me as short stories. I've opened my mind substantially since the days when I was writing formulaic poetry just to please my professors; I consider myself a better writer because I took some chances with my work.

My advice for those of you who are stuck in a short story rut, or who simply don't write anything but short stories: try something new. Write a poem or some song lyrics. It won't hurt you, and no one will laugh if you share it with them. You may even feel liberated, the way I did when I started writing fiction. It never hurts to try new types of writing. In fact, it will show the world that you're serious about your work and willing to expand your repertoire.
