The battle of good versus evil... who hasn't read a book with this battle as the main storyline? We watch heroes chase bad guys on the movie screen, and we follow the journey of beloved characters to defeat dark lords or ladies and restore peace in their worlds.
It's quite possibly the oldest story out there. We need good to overcome evil. We need to know everything will be alright in the end.
This week's Spiritual Newsletter examines this eternal struggle, and our desire to resolve it.

For the last couple of weeks, the outside world has been covered with a thick layer of snow. Temperatures in this area have plummeted to -8 to -14 Celsius at night, and daytime temperatures have remained consistently below zero. The snow is very pretty to look at. One of my cats is delighted, happily chasing snowballs and snowflakes. The other one is less pleased, and only ventures out every now and then, when he feels he must.
We live in an old house, with dysfunctional central heating on the upper floors. The one true source of heat is the downstairs fireplace. For that reason, I've spent many an hour curled up with a blanket, watching the old BtVS series from start to finish. Yes, all seven seasons of Buffy. To my amazement, I still like it as much as I did when I was younger.
For those unfamiliar with the series, the storyline is about a teenage girl who discovers she is the Chosen One. Her fate is to battle the forces of darkness - the vampires, demons and other baddies who threaten the world. It's the ancient battle between good and evil... the one story that humanity never tires of.
It's no surprise that it's a topic that keeps popping up in literature and movies around the world. In general, we want good to defeat evil, we need the light to overcome darkness. We want to know that the bad guys won't win and that everything will be alright in the end. This desire is ingrained in our nature.
And it's not only the bad things in the world that need defeating. We all have our inner demons. I think it's fair to say that we've all experienced envy at some point in our lives. We've all experienced negative thoughts, however fleeting, about ourselves or those who we feel have wronged us. Many of us will have aspects of our past to overcome - unpleasant experiences that still haunt us, either because of actions by others, or times when we, ourselves, could have done better.
We all have a dark side to our personalities. The vampire, Spike, in the Buffy series, is introduced to the viewer as one of the bad guys, but over time he is revealed to be capable of love, and in the end he redeems himself. He may be a fictional creation, but like Spike, we aren't one-dimensional beings. The best role models will have had obstacles to overcome. Even Mother Teresa battled with times of doubt. On the other side of the coin, those people who have committed unspeakable crimes will likely have some nicer qualities. It's all about how we deal with the darkness... for some it may be easier than others, but it's an ongoing process nonetheless.
Yes, it may be strange to use an old television series in a Spiritual Newsletter, but inspiration can come from the most peculiar sources, and with the darkest time of the year right on our doorstep, it's important to remember that the light will always follow. And whilst we may be pondering our resolutions for 2011, and spend time reflecting on how we can improve, it's also important to remember that nobody is perfect, but there's a lot of good to be found in all of us.

Zeke  - In my opinion, the gift you give should depend less on its cost, and more on the thought you put into selecting it.

I fully agree with you, Zeke. A gift that shows you know someone, value them and care for them is far more valuable than something that was only selected because it's the latest fashionable item.

KimChi - Thanks for the reminder that it's the thought and the love behind a gift more than the price. Children may not understand, but adults have the understanding and (empty pockets) to be grateful.
That is very true. I look at my younger sister, who is currently of the mindset that cheap = bad and expensive = good. Everything has to be of the most fashionable brand and anything else is beneath her. And yet... I know (or hope I know) that when she gets here, she will be happy with the little things because of the companionship and the festive mood and because she knows she is loved. Or maybe I'm just a dreamer...
