Letter from the editor

My friend's aunt belongs to a Laughter Club. I wasn't sure what that is, till I saw one of their meetings on TV. My first thought was, "It beats me why someone would want to look so silly!"

They did look a bit silly, standing in rows, raising their arms - and guffawing at nothing. Their leader motivated them, saying, "Louder! More! Ho ho, ha ha!" and they followed, bellowing with laughter, till all of them were reduced to tears of mirth - they didn't need to be coaxed to laugh anymore.

There I sat, in front of the TV, dissolved in laughter myself. Why was I laughing? What was funny? It was silly, remember?

Or maybe it wasn't.

The originators of the Laughter Club seem to have understood a basic truth - the joke and the laughter are a chicken-and-egg-situation. A joke makes you laugh. Laughter is a joke. So - laughter makes you laugh.

Think of it - haven't you been at a movie or a play, and you haven't understood why the dialogue was funny, you just laughed because the people next to you were laughing? Or somewhere, sometime, haven't you said, "I don't know what's funny, but I'm laughing because they laughed!"

Thank goodness laughter is infectious. That another person laughing can make you laugh, that you laughing yourself can make you laugh more.

So - trying to write a funny story and stuck for laughs? Don't be. Just laugh! *Laugh*

Heard Santa going HO HO HO HO? Well, ho ho along, nevermind if you get weird looks from people passing by!

Feeling blah? Laugh!

Someone around you feeling blah? Laugh!

Laugh, if you want to laugh!

*Bigsmile*
