Romantic Movies: Love Them or Hate Them?

When I was in sixth grade, I watched a little movie called Grease for the first time. My best friend had already seen it, so my ten-year-old self thought I was surely mature enough to watch it, too. Well, not only did I not completely understand what was going on in the backseat of that car, but I was also embarrassed by it. Embarrassed to be watching such a movie with my mother. I was the kind of girl who blushed at kissing scenes. It was horrifying. But the music. . . it was so cool!

Now I look back at that movie, seventeen years later, with a new set of eyes. Sandy changed her appearance for a guy? Seriously? And this is supposed to be romantic?

All my life, I've alternated between loving romantic movies and hating them. As should come to no surprise to anyone who has read my Love/Romance newsletters lately, love to me is a teeter-totter that I can't get off. Up, down, up, down, and never one way or the other for long.

Eventually, I became a chick-flick fanatic, drinking in as many romantic comedies as I could. I loved 27 Dresses, 13 Going on 30, and Valentine's Day. But at some point those movies started making me think. Am I supposed to be falling for the dimpled-face boy who is secretly my enemy? Running off the France to meet a man named Fred because a psychic once told me that's who I'm going to marry? Is this what love is?

Which brings me to a question that I've asked myself many times: Am I taking romantic movies too seriously? Should they be merely fantasies, an excape from reality? Why can I just not get over the fact that engagements are never the way they're portrayed in movies? Are my expectations too high because I've seen too many pink hearts and diamond rings on screen?

So, I'm asking my readers a question. Romantic movies: Love them or hate them? And why? My guess is I already know the answer. I'm a hopeless romantic, it's true. But to what extent does being a hopeless romantic make you and unrealistic romantic?
