When I was younger, I wasn't the kind of girl who had a best friend. I guess I was a bit of a loner, because while the other girls walked down the hall whispering secrets, I was sitting in the corner reading a book (and probably being whispered about.) Back then I didn't understand how one person in your life could be the "best" person in your life, so I guess I really didn't miss having a best friend.
As I got older, I started hanging out with a small group of great friends. The four of us were all sort of outsiders, and we were each other's support system throughout the hard days of high school. I considered them my closest friends. By that point, however, I had learned that having a best friend was "cool." I also felt that, although I had three fabulous friends, I didn't have one single friend to tell my secrets to, no one I could trust no matter what. So, I tried to assign myself a best friend. Crystal was the closest thing to a best friend I had at the time, so I asked her to be my best friend. Unfortunately, Crystal was already best friends with a girl she had known since she was a baby, and she didn't like to idea of having two best friends. Annie, the best friend, didn't like it very much either. She actually accused me via AIM (because that was the cool way to communicate when I was in high school) of trying to steal her best friend from her!
I was devastated. I thought I would never find a best friend and that I was not normal. I eventually got over it, because by the time I had hit college I had such a wide variety of friends that having a "best" one didn't matter anymore. I moved to Pittsburgh when I was 22 years old, where I met Sarah, who is the closest thing to a sister I have, and my definition of "best friend" changed again. Now I think it's kind of silly to call someone a "best friend," because everyone I meet adds to my experience as a person, and it's hard to say who will make the biggest impact on me in the long run. But Sarah is the person I've been looking for my entire life, the person I can confide in.
Recently, I've learned that I'm someone's "best friend," and the title has thrown me for a loop. I love the person who called me his best friend so much, but I wonder if I can live up to the title. Is it possible to be someone's best friend but not want to call them your best friend in return? It doesn't make my love for him any less, but I worry that I'm not good enough for the title "best."

Puppies are cute and, well, lovable. But they grow into dogs. We may still love 'em, but it is not the same. For me, "puppy love" is intense but likely to be transitory.-Doug Rainbow 
Good NL Crys. I think we all have at least one funny story from childhood about a crush. Mine had a less than romantic ending though. I was walking home with the boy, his friend and my brother. We were in grade school, less than third grade. Well, I snatched his baseball cap and buried it in the ground.  He wasn't real happy about that and gave me a black eye.  My brother kicked his butt though  Short relationship but very memorable!  -Brooklyn
