Introductions! I'm excited and honored to be the newest regular Fantasy Newsletter editor. Take this ride with me and hopefully we'll learn from one another. I'd like to kick off my first issue with some talk about why it's important to look into peer review groups. We'll end with some information about next month's newsletter and how it will pertain to this.

Chances are, you've heard plenty about the importance of joining peer-review groups. Working in groups is a way of sharing knowledge and experience. While you may have a firm grip on creating creatures for your worlds, based on years of study in biology and evolution, you may come up short on getting them from one planet to another via spacecraft.
Enter the fellow member who spent a year researching theories and practices on interplanetary travel. The only problem is, the details of his creatures make them unbelievable.
Pretty easy to see you two might want to pair up and help one another, but how do you find that magical person? The thing is, two writers complementing one another that conveniently is rare (but congratulations to you if you've had such an experience!), but you could find something similar in a peer-review group.
When you see someone who could use some advice from someone with your strengths, you help them. With a group where everyone is ready and eager to help, chances are better that you will find someone who can help you with your weak areas. Narrowing the group down by genre of interest gives you even higher chances of finding the specific help you need.
Another great thing about groups is being able to tap your fellows' reading pools. While you may be sure you've never seen a being like the one you just wrote into your story, another member may have. Not only might they be able to give you a title so that you can see for yourself, you can get to work on adjusting your creation to make it original.
Aside from those (and more) practical benefits, you have a support group---people who know your pains because they feel them. Encouragement from someone who has 'been there' can lift the spirit and get you back into the swing of things.
I went over just a little of the benefits of joining a peer-review group because I want to hear from you. I'd prefer to hear about online groups right here on Writing.com, but any experiences are welcome.
Over the next month, I'm going to be investigating onsite peer-review groups that have a focus on the genres of speculative fiction. If you know a great one, let me know so I can make sure it's on my list. (This is me, my peer group of newsletter subscribers, asking for your help.)
