I think most of us have days when we want to make the world a better place. When we watch the news, read the papers or look around us, it's obvious that there's room for improvement.
But if you really had the power to change things, what would you do?

If you had one day to change the world for the better, and you were granted the powers you needed to make the changes of your choice, what would you do?
I sometimes daydream about this. Not that I have delusions of grandeur or anything, but when I read about all the pain and suffering in the world, I can’t help but think it would be nice to be able to make some changes. I wouldn’t want unlimited power. I wouldn’t want to rule the planet. I’d want to be able to clean the place up a bit, to caution people that the road we’re on leads to destruction and try to inspire a better way of living.
I always get stuck, though. After I clean the oceans and get rid of all the pollution, and I come up with some awesome, functional, clean way to produce energy, it gets a bit tricky. I could change deserts into fertile places to help feed the hungry, but what effects would that have on the other creatures that thrive in these areas? And I would love to heal those who are ill, and offer cures for the various diseases that plague all living beings, but how do I stop overpopulation?
And how do I stop people from fighting? How do I stop them from deforestation, and other practices that would damage the Earth all over again? How would I stop greed, and envy, and the desire for power? How could I possibly get everyone to work together to make this a better place?
I think a part of spirituality is the quest for enlightenment. I don’t feel too enlightened when I ponder these issues. It’s all well and good to daydream about a wonderful world without hunger and fear and suffering, but I guess I’m not being realistic.
To change natural habitats to help out one species, I’d cause the destruction of others. To stop overpopulation, I’d have to limit the amount of children people can have, which would lead to no small amount of grief. To get rid of the negative aspects of human nature, I would end up changing humans into something similar to robots, without choice, without free will, without drive and passion.
I could caution people and maybe some would listen. Others would be bored, because they’ve heard it all before. My message might linger for a small while and then fade. Then life would resume as normal.
But perhaps I don’t need to have the power to change the world in the way that I described. I can try do my bit and so can you, if you want to. We're writers, right? I can write in my blog about my thoughts and ideas. I can submit articles to newspapers and magazines. I can write poems, stories, perhaps even a novel and try to inspire positivity and kindness. I can rant at you all in this newsletter, and I do apologize because I know I’m often being overly idealistic.
If we want to be a positive influence in this world, we have to start somewhere. I can’t perform miracles and powerful people will never listen to me, because I’m nobody special. I’m just one woman with a rather shaky vision, who thinks we can do better than this.
So today I ask you – what is your vision and what are you doing to make it happen? As for me, I’m pestering an international newspaper with article ideas, keeping my fingers and toes crossed that they’ll give me a chance. Maybe they’ll get so fed up with my pitches that they’ll let me write a piece to shut me up. Or maybe they’ll tell me to get lost, but if I don’t try, I’ll never know.

ԜԜ On The Road Again!  - Kitt, I can't disagree more. I too, was like you in mind and spirit. I had lived in a 30yr. long, unhappy marriage. I believed it was my lot in life. Not so!
I have met my soul-mate, only because I took a chance--a leap of faith to make the fairy tale a reality.
You know what? I met him here at WDC. Neither one of us was looking for a "mate", yet we found each other.
Never give up on the reality of soul-mates. Caution:you must be willing to take a chance at the right time.

Thanks so much for the feature in your most recent NL on Soulmates - much appreciated! 
As you can tell from many of my verses, I am a strong supporter of the soulmate concept, and yes, maybe it is out of comfort, or because of the hopeless romantic in me, but I'd like to believe it in my heart. I think the topic of soulmates is a timeless one, and I'd read about it each & every week!

Scarlett  - A very interesting and well-written newsletter. I feel very much as you do about romantic soulmates. It was quite recently someone pointed out to me a soulmate doesn't have to be a romantic partner but can be a friend or relative. I think that makes more sense as I know very few people who would claim their soulmate to be their spouse or partner. It would be wonderful for us all to meet a special someone, but we all know life is difficult and challenges us to work hard at it. Maybe that's how it's intended to be while we're here. Loved your thoughts.

Christine Cassello  - I never really believed in the Soulmate idea, although I heard preachers who did and it sounded good. My situation was one of just expecting that some day I would fall in love, marry, etc. It didn't happen because I could not love myself, so I did not know how to love anyone else. In time I felt it was not to be for me. I am a lousy housekeeper and sometimes can't stand to live with myself and I know no one else would be able to, but I have learned to be content being single. I grew up with overprotective parents and always longed to be independent. They are both deceased now and I have that independence, which is not as great as I imagined now that I am older and do not have help, but I still appreciate the freedom I have to do what I want when I want and having to get no one's permission, (except God's and I often forget to ask Him).

I so agree with you. It is one those fairy-tale romantic concepts that inspire poets and artists. I never bought into the idea, especially because I thought there has to be more than one person to whom one can adapt.
Another point is people change as they grow. What if the so-called soul-mate and the person changed into different people? Richard Bach and his second wife Leslie comes to mind...
