About This Newsletter

I believe in simplicity in introduction to new things and also that there is a wide variety of topics to be explored in this newsletter --Not only for newbies, but those that have been here for years and want to recognize newbies through reviews, etc... I think that the primary focus of this newsletter should be twofold: Just Here and Here For Years... I think that the title is so broad that this newsletter really needs to feature something for newbies as well as "oldbies". Of course, cohesiveness between the two is also important so that one does not feel lesser than the other. We are all equals here and I think the best way to convey that message to newbies is to let them see their work alongside "WdC veterans"...

Letter from the editor

Hello, darlings! I hope this finds you well and happy ...and inspired! I'd love to report that I'm feeling that inspiration, but I'm not. *Cry* I left my brain on vacation, I swear... (Or the bear at the campgrounds stole it...).

Anywho, today I thought we'd look at one of the most popular things at WdC... groups! It seems fairly straightforward and everything, but I thought that giving some details would not only help newbies get familiar with groups and what they do, but maybe it'll inspire some of you oldbies to join a new one or get active in one that you've been neglecting lately (Unfortunately, I fit into that neglectful group...). So, let's just jump right in and start...

What Are Groups?

Groups on WdC are just like groups anywhere... they're groups of members. *Wink* Please, do not misinterpret this: groups are not cliques, they are not against each other, etc... Instead, they usually work hand-in-hand to help one another. (If a group leader of ANY group tells you differently, I'd suggest running the other way; thoughts like that only breed separation and bad feelings -we have no room for that stuff at our community.). *Wink*

What Do Groups Do?

There are different types of groups that, of course, have varying focuses and contributions to the WdC Community. Here are just the main ones (or, well, the ones that jumped into my head).
*Bullet*Review Groups: These are groups who focus on spreading cheer, love, and helpful suggestions to members -of the group or WdC as a whole, through reviewing. These are probably the most common type of group and, to me, one of the most important types of groups since, well, this is a writing website and none of us are perfect, right?
*Bullet*Support Groups: These are groups that have a foundation in supporting one another or the community in various ways -this could be chatting, prayer, helping with funds, etc... Some of these groups are based upon one specific thing (like prayer or illness).
*Bullet*Temporary Groups: These are groups that are created for the purpose of a raffle or similar activity to keep the person (or people) running it sane. Most of the time, the group is deleted or cleared out at the end of the activity.

*Bullet*Writing Groups: These are groups that focus on different areas of writing so that you can connect with writers of the same form or genre that you lean toward OR groups that will challenge you to step outside of your comfort zones.

Why Join a Group?

There is a multitude of reasons, but I'm going to stick with some basics here. *Wink*
*Bullet*Community: WdC is a wide and vast land and while we are all part of one common community, it is nice to sometimes have that 'small town feel' and connect with a smaller group rather than every single member of the website. The biggest benefit to joining WdC is the friends that you make and joining groups makes that even easier.
*Bullet*Gift Points: Many of the groups that focus on reviewing reward you with gift points for every review that you do -Restrictions and rules vary by group, but the basic gist is this: follow the rules, review, get rewarded. *Bigsmile*
*Bullet*Reviews: Some review groups also focus on reviewing their own members, so you can easily get more reviews by joining such groups.
*Bullet*Inspiration: The obvious here is that 'Writing Groups' will inspire you, but the reviewing groups can prove quite beneficial in this way as well since reading and reviewing can often ignite a fire in your head just as easily as a challenge. *Smile*
*Bullet*Support: Yes, this is hand-in-hand with community, but not really... Community will support you, but having a smaller group of friends (family) to help you through something or just to support you in general is golden.

How Do I Join Group?

Joining a group is usually as simple as e-mailing a leader or filling out a simple survey. Once you find a group that you'd like to join, instructions for joining should be easily identified.

How Do I Find Groups?

Again, this is an area with plenty of answers, but here are the easiest:
*Bullet*To find groups of which you already a member, click My Account on the *Left*Left*Left* side of your screen, then click Group Memberships.
*Bullet*To find groups to join, click Browse by Type on the *Left*Left*Left* side of your screen and then click Groups.
*Bullet*If you're looking for a reviewing group, click Reviews on the *Left*Left*Left* side of your screen and then click Most Actively Reviewing Group; This, of course, shows many more groups than those focusing on reviewing, but it's a great way to see groups that are active. *Wink*

Okay, okay... enough of my rambling... Time for me to find some links for you guys and gals to enjoy! *Smile*

*Heart*,
Stephanie Grace

Editor's Picks

Sure, it may seem odd that I wouldn't choose groups for this section, but I feel like I'd be bias in my selections, so I'm taking the high road and just givin' ya some newbies to read and review. *Smile* Besides, the groups I would have featured are all on the 'Most Actively Reviewing Groups' page. *Wink*

Ask & Answer

In my last newsletter, I focused on how we sometimes have such a strong start and then lose steam and can't quite pick up the pack again... Thankfully, a few people left feedback so that I know I'm not alone...

From speaque :
I always find time running ahead of my schedule. Don't mind for having given less time than your writing deserves. I am alone sitting atop a hill to watch the the world caught up in a stampede-like situation. I am sitting on guard of those people who are not yet caught up. The world is gasping for a new genre of writings. Pl. rise to the need of the time. Thanks.

May I join you upon that hill? I can already see the view and I'm in love!!!! The detail within your comment is a true testament of your talent; Perhaps you're really on to something with a new genre... Any thoughts as to what it could be? (Perhaps 'Monderna' in which the writing is real, modern, and speaks to the stampede?).

From Jahaan
hey Stephanie...great advice..!!
this happens to me almost every time...i am much inspired by dis..:)
I m uploading my latest (but left imperfect in the way exactly you described).
It is in Hindi(official language of India), bt i have translated it in English too..!!
Just give it a look if u have time...thank you anywayz.!♥

I'm so glad that you enjoyed the newsletter! I went to your port to check out the poem, however, I definitely feel inadequate to review since my linguistic knowledge is nearly nonexistent. I think that adding the English translation to that same item or in another item would be a big plus, but that, of course, is up to you as the writer. *Wink*

From Sarita :
AUGH! Everything you wrote is So. True. I have a folder on my computer with dozens of works I started years ago and fell out of love with. I keep promising myself I'll get around to them someday, but there are new ideas in my head and fun prompts that I want to play with first...
I never thought of putting these in my portfolio here for review and revision. Hmmm... thanks for the thought! Maybe my port won't have to be so barren after all!

I can't even tell you how many things are on my 'go back to' list. I've literally got notebooks filled with 'go back to' things that I probably wouldn't even remember writing if I read through them. *Laugh* I can never get 'it' back once I walk away, so I probably have five novels written, but all different stories. *Laugh* Hmm... Perhaps we should look at those tidbits and see if we can't change the scenes from ten to make one cohesive story? Hmmm.....

From Ellie Mack :
Thanks for this newsletter!! I've been feeling sad and pathetic that I have so many unfinished projects. I've been afraid to post most of them, unfinished, unpolished, and undirected ramblings that give a closer glimpse of the unstructured rough drafts they are. I was very encouraged by this newsletter. Sometimes, I read through my newsletter, or skim sometimes, then delete. The ones that I like I refer to over and over again, not deleting until my box is too full for my taste. Thank you for being real with us. For letting us know that I'm not the only one who this applies to. On the bright side, I have quit cracking my knuckles but are still battling other delay tactics.
Ellie mack

Ya know, as badly as we all want to believe that what we post should always be the best we have to offer, that's kind of crazy. I mean, just think about it. Yes, we want a five-star rating, but if it's perfect, then why post it on this website rather than publishing it? Writing.Com is a website meant to help us broaden our horizons and heighten our abilities. Posting the things that we know are of lesser quality can really help us grow --not to mention, an item might have a 2.5 rating on WdC, but the version saved on your computer, from all those reviews with lower ratings, could be 100% ready for a publisher and those that gave it a 2.0 will just have to pay the $12.95 to buy the book and see your true genius. *Bigsmile* I am glad that I was able to encourage you ...especially since the whole newsletter was borne of me losing all thoughts. *Laugh* As far as e-mail, don't forget you can create a folder to store away things --or you can always refer to the Newsletter Archives. *Wink* I'm very flattered by your comments... and STOP BITING YOUR NAILS!!! Cracking your knuckles was bad enough, but this delay tactic is just gross! *Laugh* (I'm guilty....). *Wink*
