Letter from the editor

Don't worry if it takes you a whole page to move five minutes of action. Here are a few paragraphs of Nelson DeMille's The Lion's Game.
DeMille takes approximately 80 pages to move over the span of a few hours.

When you get to the meat of the action, slow down and take your reader through every step.

Andy McGill shouldered his fire ax in his left hand and put the back of his gloved right hand against the aircraft's door. The back of the fire glove was thin and theoretically you could feel heat through it. He waited a few seconds, but felt nothing.

He moved his hand to the emergency external door handle and yanked on it. The handle moved out away from its recess, and McGill pushed up on the handle to disarm the automatic escape chute.

The reader is getting a play-by-play of every movement of Andy McGill. The author has primed the reader, getting him/her ready for this moment. But before DeMille lets the reader in on the "action", he slows down and takes baby steps. The reader is on pins and needles, living the second-by-second with the character.

The next time you describe your action scene, slow it down and take the reader along with you...one step at a time.

Ask & Answer

mike238 says, "Amazing, that one made me laugh. Great work."

glo-stick says, "I agree about the style. You said that if you read a certain author, you will begin to see the techniques he or she uses. For me, at least, if I read the same author for a couple of days, I will then start writing in his or her exact style. One time, I read a couple of the Harry Potter books all in a row, and I started writing like J.K. Rowling! Anyway, I think you do make a wonderful point about the importance of style. Write on!"

Olivia says, "thank you for the great advice."
