What is a Blog, Anyway?


When I was a little girl, I attempted (many times) to keep a diary. I had the locked kind, and then I had the kind that had no lines on the paper so I could draw in it, then I had the ones that had fun little designs on each page, and, and, and... I had lots of them. None of them could I get past a few pages before I either stopped writing in it, or I tore out all of the pages.

I have been more successful with Blogs, however - the digital form of the paper journals and diaries. (I think it's because I can't lose them beneath my bed.) Blogs are very much like those old journals and diaries. Instead of taping in pictures, you can inbed them on the page. There are a few other benefits, though.

1. Since you're using typing and fonts, more people will be able to read it! That is... if you want it read, of course. There are also ways to make your entries personal so only you can see them.

2. You can imbed videos! That's right. You can put videos in blogs! In the case of Writing.Com, you might need to get yourself a free YouTube account and load the videos there, but then you can put them right into your Writing.Com blogs. You couldn't do that with journals or diaries on paper.

3. People can actually reply to what you have to say. You can share with others, and have them reply to you. They can pat you on the back, or show sympathy, or... well, some can be pretty mean in comments, but I haven't yet seen that on Writing.Com.


How do you get a blog? It's easy! All you need to do is create a book item (you need to be at least at the Upgraded level to do this) and select "Journal/Blog" as the Item Type. Edit it as you please so the top my have exactly what you'd like on it. Don't forget to save it!

You then set it as your blog by clicking on your username at the top of the left sidebar, select the "Options" tab, select "Personal Display Options", and then put the ID of your item into the Blog Item ID #.
