Newbie Contests and Activities

*Glassesb* Do you get in a rut and enter the same contests or activities every month? I'd like to encourage you to branch out and explore some contests and activities held by new members. Often these are the contests that need participation because the new member isn't aware as to how to promote their item. Often these new activities or contests aren't listed in the promotion forums like "Writing Contests @ Writing.Com or "Activities @ Writing.Com. You can find them by clicking the Reading link in the left column and searching the Message Forums (the most common platform for contest/activities).

*Glassesb* Check out these items and see if you can enter. If it's not something for you, help our new members out by reviewing and perhaps donating to their prize bank. Participation is what keeps our community active. In your review, point out what additions to the rules or explanation that needs help. Did they put a deadline? Is the prompt easy to understand? Mentoring new members can not only be rewarding, but will help you network on the site with other members. Isn't that why you're here?

*Glassesb* You could also sponsor their item in Bid Click. This is found in the left column, My Account > My Bid Click. If you haven't tried sponsoring an item before, this is a good time to experiment with small bids in genres or less popular item types like Quiz. Or help the new member walk through promoting their work on the above mentioned promotion pages. Spread the word! Ask your site friends or members from groups you belong, to help by entering these hidden gems.

*Stop* So please, take a moment and help our community by reviewing or mentoring a new member. Write and Participate on!

Ask & Answer

This month's question: What advice could you give a new member?
Send in your answer below! *Down* Editors love feedback!

Last month I wrote about trying new genres. Here are the replies to last month's question: How successful are your attempts with new genres?

Dawn Embers replied: In answer to the question, it depends on the genre. I've tried a few times to write horror and just struggle with it every time. There is something about the genre that I just can't figure out. However, I tried erotica on the whim of "can I actually do it" and that was like 4 years ago. Now I run the Weekly Quickie and some know me for my m/m stories. I never thought I'd be able to write such when I joined. So, you never know unless you try.

Jeff answered: My attempts at other genres have all been successful in the sense that I learned something from the experience and am proud of the fact that I tried something new. In terms of quality, though... let's just say there are a few genres with which I'm not particularly proficient. *Rolleyes* *Laugh*
