Cliffhangers


According to one of my best friends, “Webster’s New World College Dictionary” a cliffhanger is an early type of serialized film in which each episode ended with a suspenseful climax, as the hero hanging from a cliff, 2) any highly suspenseful story, situation, etc.

The first part of the definition is what I’ll be talking about in this editorial. You are reading along in your favorite Fantasy author’s new book. It is the start of a new series and you get so engrossed in it that you’ve spent the day just reading. The phone rings, or better yet, your addiction to Writing.Com takes over and you log on to check your email. You decide to bookmark your page so you can come back to it later… This is not a cliffhanger.

How often should a writer use cliffhangers in their work? Some would say that the end of every chapter should end with us wanting to read on to see what happens to the hero. Some would agree that they should be used sparingly, while others think that they should never be used. I think that, as writers we should learn to use what works in our writing style. I have tried a cliffhanger in one of my Sci-Fi stories.

The review that this story gets has everyone asking me how the story ends and I most always reply with, “How do you think the story ends?” After all isn’t that the purpose of writing, getting your reader to think about your characters, the obstacles they are up against and the evil they will overcome. Throughout the story you are throwing your readers into different plot twists and exposing them to different settings, why can’t you throw them for a loop in the ending or leave them wondering…

In your next story try leaving them with a cliffhanger.
