The Power of Water
Many people like to fall asleep to the sound of a babbling brook or tinkling fountain. Admit, the white noise blocks out distractions and soothes so a person can relax and direct their thoughts inward. There are even music CDs with nothing but soothing nature sounds to fall asleep with. Obviously this is why people flock to beaches. Not only is it a cool place in summer, but the sounds of the waves and laying in the sun are relaxing things to do. Fountains and water walls are featured in lobbies of buildings to make places to work, live and shop more appealing. Showers are relaxing and now there are "shower experiences" being installed in homes. These can feature things like steam, giant rain shower heads and even blasting sprays from every direction.
An average bathtub holds 40 or 50 gallons of water, which weighs about 350 pounds. That doesn't seem like much, does it? But then multiply that by a wall of water ten feet high and miles wide and the destructive power of the tsunami is born. Not only does the water cause destruction, but the debris carried by the water becomes deadly in force. The same occurs for hurricanes. The rising tide causes flooding, but the wind and it moving the risen water can cause even more destruction.
The Hoover dam is a marvel. The phenomenal amount of concrete, 3.25 million cubic yards was used to harness the river. The dam itself is 660 feet wide at the bottom but only a mere 45 feet across at the top. The water pressure at the base of the dam is 45,000 pounds per square foot. Not really a place you'd like a leak to develop. Have any gum?
So the next time you feature some water in your action / adventure story, think about how a little water can be comforting, but a lot can be entirely frightening.

Excerpt: "Well, yes . . . " his grandma began, "we dip our fingers in the holy water and make the sign of the cross. When we do that we are askin' for God's blessing and to cleanse us of our sins. Father Patrick sprinkles it on the congregation to bless and protect us from the powers of evil. I'd say that's pretty important, wouldn't you?"

Excerpt: So the meteorite came down without much notice one summer afternoon in the middle of Lake Superior. It made a big splash and a small fizz. Anyone who witnessed it would have thought it a large fish breaking the surface of the water to feed. But, like a fish, after it hit the surface of the water, it descended deeper and deeper, where it stayed on the sandy bottom of the Lake for nearly 20 years. Until now.
Excerpt: Seagulls heralded the rise of the sun while perched atop the heavy timbers of the dock. The five who would set out to sea on the Cheshire made trips to and fro along the dock with their supplies. Jan, the captains lady was the first to notice the deep orange and reddish tones which pushed back the twilight and the remaining stars.

Tinman  responded: I live in the rural deep south, with heavy woodlands and small creeks nearby. I can step off my front porch and be immersed in nature by walking across the yard. Ha! As far as an adventure, I always take a machette and a walking stick with me. There are few things that a sturdy staff won't handle, so I sometimes travel with a shotgun, but mostly a walk in the woods is about finding peace....and not getting lost too badly.
