Letter from the editor

Being new is not a bad thing.

As soon as your open that door and walk through, you're presented with an opportunity only you can embrace. Whatever that opportunity presents will be new. At least for some period of time.

So, what do you have in common with more than one million other WDC members? You are (or were once) a Newbie.

Newbie ... noob ... newby--however you slice it, this is a term used affectionately to denote our newest members to Writing.Com. However, in my humble opinion, your level of "newbie-ism" depends upon your comfort level with navigating around WDC. In between writing and posting your stories, become familiar with the many other features this site has to offer. Experience banishs that feeling of newness.

Talk to five different members and you'll get five different definitions of what constitutes a newbie. Remember one thing--because a member is new to WDC doesn't mean they have nothing to offer our more established members. To quote our Reference Guide, "Writing.Com 101:

Indeed, some of our newer members have already been published in magazines and other literary venues, and may have much to offer our seasoned members. In turn, our older members remember what it was like when they first came on board, and are happy to offer advice and assistance to those folks who need it.

Even the (WDC Reference) Guide doesn't designate a specific time frame for Newbie. Suffice it to say, every new member has a learning curve when learning about WDC. How long you feel a newbie depends upon how comfortable you feel with the members and features of the site.

That said, some groups, forums and contests do include time contraints to which new members must adhere when participating in those activities. For example, the Read a Newbie section, located in the left column below Sponsored Items, or by clicking http://www.writing.com/main/list_items/type/newbie, lists items for members who are 31 days or newer to Writing.Com.

Some contests are run specifically for our newer members. One such event is "Invalid Item, which is open to members who have been registered for six months or less. Check the guidelines or rules of each activity to determine any applicable limitations.

I submit being a newbie on Writing.Com is very much a state of mind. While some places on WDC may identify you as "new" for their events, allowing those constraints to govern your actions on site will just impede your progress and overall enjoyment of this multi-faceted writing site. Embrace being new, but forge new friendships and delve into the features offered.

Write on!

Ask & Answer

And from the mailbox about my last Noticing Newbies newsletter, "Divergent Paths.

From tj ~ endeavors to persevere! : I would like to extend my congratulations to those recently promoted to Moderator, and a big thank you to all the Moderators. In many ways, you are all the unseen heroes that keep WDC a wonderful place for all.

On behalf of all Mods, thank you. *Delight*

From Happy May 2024! : Thanks a bunch for the newsletter mention *Smile*. It will be awhile before I get used to this 'color'.

I know exactly what you mean, Miss Connie. I have no doubt you'll be a great Mod. *Wink*

From Mark Allen Mc Lemore : This makes perfect sense of the site known as writing.com. In the beginning one will find humility from those who don't know them personally, which is a good thing. Hopefully, if one sticks it out; their writing will be refined, professional bonds will be made with others and, alas, a voice will be found as well as a publisher,

Perhaps "alas" will be appropriate ... or, just maybe "fortunately" will be the order of the day, Mark. *Wink*

From BIG BAD WOLF is hopping : When one looks back, they can see how much they've grown.

Indeed, they can.

From deadstroke : Haven't been on the site for a month yet, but already love the community and how helpful everyone is. I found the best way to get good useful reviews is to give them first. Congrats to the new blues!!

The willingness of others to help me out when I first joined was a big reason for me staying here. That was one decision I've never regretted. *Smile*

From Mitchopolis : I love WDC. I made my year anniversary this month and I didn't hesitate to pony up the dough for renewing my membership - I even upgraded. I always want to do more in the WDC community, but then I feel like I should be working on my stories and not surfing the forums, reviewing items or any of the other "distractions" . Your newsletter has given me a different perspective now. I can see how it all works toward the same goal and probably even helps against burn out. Thanks for the insight.

I'm glad to help. I believe our journey on WDC swings like a pendulum--writing, surfing, then back to writing (tho with a healthy dose of surfing) ... at least for me! *Rolleyes* Congrats on the upgrade.
