About This Newsletter

The dramas and challenges of life are woven through the basic romantic themes in a contemporary romance novel. The hero and heroine attempt to build and sustain their romantic relationship, while they live and love in a contemporary setting.

Letter from the editor

At the core, a romance has a central love story with a satisfying ending. Apart from the requirement for a happy ending, romance stories can be dark, scary, quirky, or fun. Romantic stories are as varied as life itself. Contemporary stories are a subgenre that are mostly plot driven and concentrate on a modern day dilemma. While they are usually action-packed and fast paced, they also have a broad base with the ability to appeal to almost everyone.

When writing Contemporary Romance choose your characters for your story carefully. Figure out who they are, and why you want to write about them. What kind of limits does the time of your piece place on your characters?

Sketch a rough outline of your story. Now that you have your main characters, what model of story are you going to tell? Is this a Romeo and Juliet story where the two characters fall in love, but are kept apart for some reason? Is this a tragedy, or a comedy? Is this a story based on true events, a song, something you heard on the news? Sketch out a rough outline of your story, making sure you have a beginning, a middle and an end.

Whenever you are writing in a genre you are unfamiliar with do intensive research. On top of this read authors that have already blazed a trail in the genre that you want to attempt. A few notable writers of contemporary romance include: Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Elizabeth Bevarly, Jennifer Crusie, and Rachel Gibson. Paula Detmer Riggs, Theresa Weir, Kathleen Eagle, or Ruth Wind. And my all time favorite Nora Roberts.
