Believable Characters...a Questionaire


For this Fantasy Newsletter Editorial I’m not going to write any thing close to being construed as a Fantasy or even Sci-Fi but I’m going to treat this editorial as a series of questions for a future newsletter.

On my desk right now I have a book written by Marc McCutcheon called “Building Believable Characters”. In the first chapter of the book he has asks six different authors some questions on building believable characters… I’m going to ask for your opinions on some of these questions and maybe even ask you a few of mine.

The first set of questions is from Mr. McCutcheon…

What sort of planning goes into the creation of your characters? What must you know about them before you can tell their story?

Do you use composites of people you know as characters?

Physical features. Many authors introduce their characters by describing them from head to toe; others spend little or no time on physical aspects. Do you think physical descriptions are important? What devices do you find most effective when trying to help a reader visualize a protagonist?

I know in a lot of the Fantasy stories and novels that I like to read, some of the more memorable characters are those that aren’t human or even humanoid, for instance Abernathy the Court Scribe in “The Landover Series” by Terry Brooks, or “Buckbeak” in Harry Potter. So how do you make this characters believable?

And when you are answering these questions, don’t be afraid to send in an excerpt or an item link to one of “Your” memorable characters or stories.
