Letter from the editor

Check out the Browse by Genre section in the Navigation Menu and you'll find Comedy listed as a separate genre. Of course, comedy encompasses a wide array of forms--subsets, if you will--that further define life's comedic experience.

Comedy is dependent upon several things: the source of the humor, such as pets or small children; the method of delivery, verbal, visual or written; and the context in which this humor is delivered, such as satire or improvisation. One or more of these are part and parcel of the various forms of comedy.

Comedy may be divided into multiple forms. Some of these forms partial to the written experience include:

*Bullet* Observational comedy: Pokes fun at everyday occurrences by inflating their normally trivial nature and the way society views these events.

*Bullet* Character comedy: Derives humor from a persona invented by a performer, often from stereotypes.

*Bullet* Spoof: Recreating a book, film or play for humor, and is used to make fun of or ridicule a certain production

*Bullet* Wit or Word Play: A more intellectual comedy based on clever, sometimes subtle manipulation of language, such as with puns.

*Bullet* Sitcom: Scripted dialogue regarding themed situations.

Many of these forms overlap and can be used over the gamut of the written word from short stories through full novels. Comedy provides a unique expression of your creative talents. I enjoy sipping an iced mocha at my local coffee shop watching those folks around me. I usually find something funny (though sometimes poignant as well) from listening to various conversations or watching their interactions.

Try looking at life around you with the object of making folks around you smile a little. You may just find that smile looking back at you when you look into the mirror.

As a guest editor, I'm afraid I have no feedback to offer.

Tell me if there's a specific type of comedy that tickles your funny bone. Or, perhaps make some suggestions for a future issue. Thanks for spending time with me today.
