About This Newsletter

Drama occurs all around us each and every day in our ordinary lives. What we do with that drama makes all the difference in the world. As writers, we should be filling notebooks with ideas for stories based on real life happenings that we have witnessed. Then, we need to look back at those notes and mold and blend them into wonderful works of fiction for all the world to read*Smile*

Letter from the editor

Autumn is once again in the air, and all the little kiddies are back in their classrooms learning all the things they need to know. Parents are relieved that the boredom of summer is over and that the teachers can once again oversee the better part of their children's days. And, as usual, I am back in crazed teacher mode as I begin another grueling year of getting my eighth grade math students prepared for the state mandated grade level test that is given in that infamous month of March. You know, some day when I retire, I'm going to be relaxed about this whole thing to sit back and write a story -- or maybe even a novel -- about the wacky world of eighth grade math teachers! However, at the moment, I am too busy writing a supplemental math book of open-ended word problems to go along with our math text...what's that you ask? Why am I bothering to do this? Well, first of all because I am crazy, and second because none of the math books currently available have enough word problem practice in them to get the kids prepared for the way the state wants them to answer the tested open-ended questions. Needless to say, the dramatic tension in my life skyrockets with the beginning of each new school year.

In addition to my work life, I have a six-year-old daughter who just started first grade and is panicking about going for the first time to the school's lunch room for lunch. She also has to punch in a four digit pin number when she swipes her lunch card, and she is absolutely certain that she will never be able to remember those blessed four digits and will have to go day after day without lunch. And...as if that all isn't enough, I am also privately tutoring six students, ranging in age from 12 to 19, during my spare time in the evenings. But, hey, seriously, if it wasn't fun and/or intriguing, I wouldn't be doing it, right? Right! I'm just glad that I'm not one of those people who finds everything about life boring! I've just got too much to do in too little time to be bored...know what I mean?

Then, I look around at my students and listen to their stories of parents in jail, broken homes, parents in other countries, poverty, etc, and I am forced to think that even though my life is full of drama, it is all good drama as opposed to the kind of drama that nightmares are made of. We all need a little reality check of that kind now and then, especially when we get too caught up in the drama that keeps our own lives moving forward.

Now, what does all of this have to do with a drama newsletter? Aside from making everyone's head spin, it is meant to show that drama swirls around us on a daily basis, and all we have to do is reach out and grab it to find material for at least a short story or two. I fully intend, within the next several weeks, to look back on this opening month of school and jot down some notes that will eventually be turned into a story.

Anyway, enough babbling! This is ~InkyShadows~ signing off until next time! Bye now!

Dear InkyShadows,
I was sorry to hear about your infant son who died, when reading your newsletter. My prayers are with you. I enjoy your newsletter and look forward to receiving it. Keep up the good work!
Sincerely,
Kelly

Thanks, Kelly! I appreciate both the prayers and the kudos on my newsletter*Smile*

Thanks for another great newsletter, Inky. You're so right about keeping a journal. I kept one through my father's death, my husband's near death and my daughter's cancer. All high drama. My only regret is that I didn't begin keeping it sooner. Your example of drawing on your painful feelings for your novel show how a journal is even more than great therapy. And thanks for featuring my story, too. PT

Sounds like you have been through some rough times, too, Paige Turner. Don't regret that you didn't start sooner...instead, pick up the journal threads from where you did start and weave them into a blanket of hope and maybe even into a story or two along the way.
