Not long ago, someone approached me online and asked if there were any romance groups to offer a new writer on a different forum as suggestions for site involvement. Well, I did a search and came across a couple contests banks but that is all. Which leads to the question: Why are there no active groups focus on Romance alone on the site?
I don't have an answer but it's my overall topic for today. Romance is a popular genre, reading and writing. In fact, it's probably the most popular subgenre too because it's an element that fits with so many other genres and assists with character development. There are web sites, blogs and such that are dedicated to the genre.
There are off site groups. The biggest one that I know if in particular is an organization known as RWA, Romance Writers of America. If publishing in the genre, it's the big one to check out. Membership does cost but an organization like RWA has very many helpful resources for authors. And they hold conferences all over the country. Plus local chapters mean the potential for local writers groups who all focus on the same genre: romance. Though subgenres will vary and I'm sure I don't need to tell anyone here that victorian romance is very different than paranormal romance.
A few contests exist on the site. There is a seasonal romance contest, for example, that is currently closed and judging for their spring round. Every now and then a poetry contest comes up that is romance only focused. Though many poetry contests in general might allow a romance poem if it fits the prompt. A couple contests allow romance and/or erotica, so there is the option for those contests and while the adult content stories might intimidate a couple, there are some awesome judges who would like to see a romance take on their prompts in some of the rounds.
Some activities exist that focus on romance. I picked a couple below that all vary between polls, campfires, searches, and even an in & out. I didn't do an interactive because I don't quite have the time to weed through those for one that is romance and not well, what some interactives are fond to write, but there are a few out there that are focused on 13+ rated romance. There are things to do to a degree that involve the genre as the main focus.
Just not any active groups. And in truth, there can always be more items. It's a great genre, so question is: Why aren't there more? If you have the answer: let me know.

Would you take part in a romance group on WDC? Would you like to see more contests or other activities that focus on romance?
Last time, I wrote about the "almost moment" in romance stories. It seemed to go well and here are a few comments sent in about the topic.

A fine News Letter, Things have changed since my day. Points on almost rather than the happening?
- Thank you. The basic answer is to write as if there is going to be the moment then find a way to stop it from happening just when you and the reader think it might. Like with the almost kiss. The character senses it's going to happen, they take a breath, then someone else walks in and character jumps away at the sound of the door. Though, better written, of course.

Recently, I watched a movie called "My Name is Bruce", starring Bruce Campbell as Himself. There's plenty of Almost Moments when Bruce tries to kiss this woman, but something always interrupts them, manly the fact that his hands go to unwanted places.

ELF-What an interesting NL I loved it. I never thought of "Planning" the almost kiss, or leading up to a "moment" that doesn't happen. You have pushed my button and I'm saving this NL for use when I do my romance. I wrote a short start to it when the two MC start to kiss, (they do it) but his father and his son (this is an older couple) walk by and makes remarks before the kiss can take hold. They feel the attraction but it can't take hold because HIS DAD and SON interrupt. She's embarassed and so is he. I think you need to take this and put it out for discussion here on Wdc. I never heard of the blogfest you mentioned but I'd sure look for a post on newsfeed if you feel so inclined. This site would be smokin'.
- Thanks for the comment. I had never really thought about it before the intentional no kiss blogfest, back when I started doing small scenes on my blog. They can be fun to write. I'll try to post more in my newsfeed when I have fun things going on in my blogs of site. I often forget that option.
