It That The Truth?
Last month I wrote about collecting and you readers sent some interesting responses. And since you admitted your little collecting idiosyncrasies, I thought I'd admit one of mine. I love factoids. I'm a font of useless factoids. What are factoids...?

"A factoid is a questionable or spurious (unverified, false, or fabricated) statement presented as a fact, but without supporting evidence. The word can also be used to describe a particularly insignificant or novel fact, in the absence of much relevant context
The word factoid is now sometimes also used to mean a small piece of true but valueless or insignificant information, in contrast to the original definition." ~Wikipedia
From Guiness World Records -The longest fingernails in the world today belong to Christine Walton from Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Her longest individual nail is the right thumbnail, at an astonishing 107 cm (3 ft 8 in). I think about her every time I try to open a can of soda and break a wimpy stub of a nail.
So far as of 2013, the world's biggest chicken was named Big Snow. It was bred in Australia and weighed 23 pounds 3 ounces. Big Snow died on September 6, 1992 of natural causes. I think of Big Snow at dinner time. 'Nuff said.
So the next time you're trying to find a unique adventure or activity, think about searching factoids. They may not be perfectly true, but I'm sure your imagination can take care of the loose ends and details. If you want to try an activity, I'll leave you with this little classic; At Saint-Bernard school in Drummondville, Quebec, 1500 students from kindergarten to high school, plus all the staff, got together and broke the world record for most people performing Anna Kendrick's 'Cups' song (Pitch Perfect's 'When I'm Gone') at the same time, according to the World Record Academy. That's a lot of cups!

A*Monaing*Faith answered: Seems like there would be WAY more than 550 PEZs out there!
I collect coins and foreign currency whenever I get my hands on it.
But I love to collect KEYCHAINS! I had a gazillion before everything in my old house got stolen *le sigh* Back to the drawing board.
P.S. In the WDC world I like to 'collect' my reflections/views on things! That count?

len_gray replied: I collect books :) It started when I was about 5. My dad and I had decided that when I grew up we would run a used bookstore together. The most that I've ever had in my collection was 1, 564 books. The fun part for me was finding books that no one had seen before. I had a leather-bound, gold-leafed copy of The Iliad and the Odyssey($80 resale), I had an out-of-print version 1st edition of The Weirdstone of Brisingamen by Alan Garner with an introduction by a fledgling Andre Norton(about $180), and many more that were dear to my heart. Every time I went to a flea market, garage sale, or bookstore, there was a sense of looking for treasure. I've lost a lot of books in my journey but I still love collecting them!
They also make great gifts!
BIG BAD WOLF is hopping admits: To be honest, I collect books, and movies. Let's focus on my Redwall books though, or else I'd be all day.
It started innocently- I found the book Redwall on a book shelf in class in the third grade. The thing is- I never put it back. Later, I found another in a book sale, and then my mother got one of those bundle collections for me, and my cousin's cousin had a bunch he didn't want anymore. As for the rest, I got it here and there, until Last year, when I ordered the last two novels from Amazon. Needless to say, I own all of the novels. The question is, "Where do I get the rest of the merchandise that comes with the series, like those Companion Books that talk about the characters, and such?"
Merchandising is big business.
blue jellybaby confesses: I don't think I have a collection as such but my partner does think I have a bit of a hoarding problem! I beg to differ  However, I do have a large amount of notebooks that grows continually if I see a pretty one. I tend to keep all my old parking tickets for places I've been. I also keep all my cinema tickets. When I was younger I used to collect Point Horror books and I still have them now though I'm sure there have been many more published! As of now I don't collect a specific thing but feel like I might need to change this!
Hopefully those tickets are paid!
Quick-Quill tells us: Years ago I decided I wanted to start collecting the Dept 56 Dickens Village set. I told my husband, and I thought to buy the starter set and add a few pieces every year or if some went on sale. The first year he bought the starter set and 3 houses. They fit on a shelf in my family room. The next year he added 3 more houses and more accessories, people, carts, etc. Over the next years he bought a total of 32 buildings, 75 people,carts, etc. We made a city out of foam with layers that are painted. Its 9 feet by 4 feet and has its own table with holes cut in the bottom to hide the cords. My husband didn't COLLECT he SHOPPED. We hit all the Dept 56 sales. The last 6 years I've only put it up 3 times, and we haven't bought one piece. It takes a lot of space and time! People love to see it and ask if we are going to do it again. I would love to sell the set but I don't think people "collect" anymore.
Maybe you need a bigger family room!
Shanachie collects too: I collect button pins (I'm hoping you understand what I mean--the ones that the kids used to wear in like the 80s all over the jean jackets. I probably have close to 1000 of them now (not sure of the count because they're mostly in storage). The rarest one I have is a JFK campaign button. And I started when I was probably 7 or 8, but I don't remember the reason.
Now you can collect physical merit badges, which come as a button pin, lucky you!
