Welcome to this week's Poetry Newsletter. I'm Crys-not really here . This week, I'm talking about the Diamante form.

The Diamante


A few days ago, I was teaching a reading and writing enrichment course to a small group of 6th-8th graders. It was poetry day, one of my favorite days of the week! I asked the class to make a list of every kind of poem they could think of. I was very surprised when one of the 7th graders called out "the diamante!"

Now, I had never even heard of a diamante until a couple of years ago, when I discovered the form right here on Writing.com, so I was very surprised that a thirteen year old knew how to write one. However, when I thought about it I realized that a diamante is really just a very specific form of concrete poetry or shape poetry. Concrete poetry is any poem written in a shape. It can be as simple as something like a love poem shaped like a heart, or as complex as the diamante, which has a set number of lines and other specifications. Kids love concrete poems. I still remember them being one of the first forms of poetry I learned in elementary school.

The diamante follows the following form, in order to take on the diamond shape:

Line 1: subject
Line 2: Two Adjectives
Line 3: Three gerunds('ing words)
Line 4: Four words about the subject
Line 5: Three gerunds('ing words)
Line 6: Two adjectives
Line 7: Synonym for the subject

Not only is the diamante a creative way of writing a poem, it also helps students learn different parts of speech, such as adjectives, gerunds, and synonyms. I had never considered asking my students to write diamantes before, but now that I see how it can be used as both a creative and educational tool, I definitely will!
