Quote for the week:
"Yesterday, upon the stair,
I met a man who wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today,
I wish, I wish he'd go away..."

Letter from the editor

Which horror monster or villain scares you the most? Is it the monster from "Alien", a rotting zombie, a bloodthirsty vampire, or a savage werewolf? Maybe it is someone who looks perfectly normal, like Norman Bates or cute little Rhoda Penmark from "The Bad Seed." All of them are very frightening in different ways, but sometimes the scariest face is no face at all.

The unknown is always more frightening than the known. What could be more unknown than an invisible character? You never know where it is or what it might do next. Here are a few reasons a character might be invisible:

Death: Even ghosts who mean no harm are scary, and malevolent ones, such as poltergeists are especially evil. Unlike the average ghost, poltergeists are somehow able to manipulate matter and cause physical harm.

Magic: Every kid who read the Harry Potter stories would love to have an invisibility cloak, but imagine this magic power in the hands of an evil character.

Science: The title character of the book and film, "The Invisible Man" became invisible due to a science experiment gone wrong.

From another world: Who knows what form an alien species might take? They might have no form at all.

Of course, sometimes when nobody is there, nobody is really there. This type of nobody is not so innocent either. It only serves to distract you from a dangerous somebody or something who really is there. You hear a noise on the front porch, or laughter from the next room, and go to investigate, but nobody is there. Then you turn around and....AAAAH!!!!

Something to try: Write a horror story in which the villain or monster is invisible.
