Sad Drama


Writing dramatically.


The classic definition of drama is a story that is being told through the performance of actors on a stage or in a movie. The word "drama" comes from a Greek work that means "action," or "to do," or "to act." This explains why dramas of old always go back to plays. Shakespeare and other writers wrote their stories in a way that they were best experienced in a theater.

Going by this assumption, it seems all dramas on Writing.Com should be plays, but they aren't. While perusing the site and seeking out what kind of writing authors labelled as drama, I found that the common thread is tragedy. That is not wrong. According to Aristotle drama is made up of either tragedy or comedy.

Legend has it that Aristotle wrote long pieces about tragedy and comedy each. Only his paper on tragedy survived the ages while the one on comedy was lost.

It seems this loss of the comedy document has, over time, led to an assumption that drama equals something sad or emotionally disturbing. At least that is how I always thought about drama until I read up on it. I thought it meant something tragic or sad. As in the phrase, "Don't be so dramatic," when we mean to tell somebody not to be upset about something. Or have you ever used the same phrase, "Don't be so dramatic," when somebody was having fun and laughing out loud?
