Hallow's Eve is nearly upon us. In keeping with the spirit of the season, I would like to share a tool for your writer's toolbox.
Have you ever heard of a Writer's Morgue? No? Well, allow me to enlighten you...
Take a box, any old box. Decorate it, if that suits you. Now, you have the "building" to house your Morgue. All you need do now is to furnish it!
As you are reading a magazine, is there a picture that captures your imagination? Person, place, thing? Snip it and add it to your Morgue. Articles, newspaper items or even sales adds make great additions. Don't stop at the big picture either. Clothing and household decor are helpful too!
For example, my Morgue is a plain cardboard box. It is home to pictures of people that have captured my imagination, places, furniture and decor, clothing, newspaper stories and magazine articles.
The idea is to have a place to go to when you might need a bit of inspiration or assistance with description.
If you find describing a character just isn't working, sift through this collection. One of the pictures you snipped just may be the ticket.
Problems with imagery? Find a picture that represents, even loosely, what you want and take it from there.
In need of a story idea? I've clipped newspaper stories that I felt might be great fodder for a future tale.
Another example: if I find several items that I can use for a particular piece, I tack them up on my corkboard for easy access.
The possibilities of your Morgue are endless and no two writers' will be alike. I've found this to be very useful. I hope you do too!

From, I list this as Anon, since I don't want to offend: Hey Nik, I realize people can burn out of topics when it comes time for the newsletters. But really, 2 paragraphs about poetry? You should have a backup for when you can't think of something to write. Also, try 6-10 featured items instead of just 4. If you can't get to six, add 2 contests. We owe our readers a quality effort.
I featured this because the author of this letter was right. It was a lazy NL and you deserve better. I apologize to my readers and will put forth a better effort. It was a kick in the seat that I needed. I've already thanked this person in private. I want to thank them again for helping me to become a better editor.
