I'm honored to be your guest host for this week's Writing.Com Noticing Newbies Newsletter.

Our WDC Community welcomes daily 'Newbies' who arrive, each with a unique voice, eager to add that voice to the symphonic chorus that is our Community. To all the 'Newbies' and 'Not So Newbies' in our Community, whatever your dreams and aspirations in writing ~ Welcome, fellow writers *Pencil*

The moment a man sets his thoughts down on paper,
however secretly,
he is in a sense writing for publication.

Letter from the editor

Greetings, fellow writers. We each arrive here with a unique vision, and want to share our vision in prose and verse with others in the WDC Community. And what a versatile creative group we are *Thumbsup*. Each of us is welcomed with open arms and an open mind and a portfolio to keep and showcase this unique vision of our world in words.

Our portfolios are unique and copyrighted to each of us and we decide how we want to present our work, whether public or private, polished draft or final version. When placing work in portfolios, remember a few things:"

*Starg* Remember to select the option to have your 'static item' viewable by "Registered Members" or "Registered Authors." This setting will, in most cases, allow you to maintain the story, poem, or article as unpublished by a magazine, ezine or book publisher if you choose to submit for publication. I know you check publication guidelines with care, and most of them do consider a closed forum review or draft as maintaining the option of first rights publication, so that's a safe option for your work.

*Reading* Consider your fellow writers as readers, reviewers, critique partners, editors as well as peers. With that in mind, if you present your story or poem or article in a professional manner, you're more likely to get a thoughtful read with some encouraging and provocative comments. Most of us draft offline and upload our work to create a static item to share with our fellows our world in words. Most of us also hope to receive some feedback as to how well we've presented our world - did our poem reach the heart or ignite the mind or ease the spirit; did our story entertain, delight, mesmerize, or coax a laugh.

*Bulletb* When uploading documents, as when drafting directly onsite to a new static item, read over your work. Consider your item as you would a submission to a magazine or editor or your professor. After you've run your spellchecker, read it through with your own eyes.

*Right* You can hit the SAVE and EDIT box at the bottom of the static item screen and continue editing and drafting, as well as adding ML codes to create the visual effect you desire.

*Right*For example, in a story or article, separate paragraphs with a space, whether you indent or not, to allow your reader visual breaks. Also, begin each new character's comment or quote with a new paragraph. These are standards commonly required by publications, so not a bad habit to embrace as you upload work to your portfolio. *Smile*

*Starbl* The most common formatting that vanishes with my uploads is centering and indenting. ML codes to fix those items require but a few keystrokes, as follow:

*Bulletr*Center = { center } TYPE THE TITLE { /center } [with no space between the bracket and its contents]

*Bulletg*Indent = { indent } Begin typing the paragraph. End the paragraph with a return key and you will create a space before the next paragraph.

*Bulletb* Boldface = { b } { /b } (Note the backslash is the toggle to turn off the command

*Bulletv* Italics = { i } { /i } wrapped before and after the text you wish to italicize.

These are the most common ML Commands to make the presentation of your work clean and professional in your portfolio. The full listing of ML codes with examples is available with but a few keystrokes, as follows:

At the top left of your screen, under Site Navigation
click Site Tools and then ML Help for the basic ML codes as well as a growing creative array of fun stuff like colors and balloons *Balloon6* and crittters *Skunk* and other cool images for your use as you build your portfolio *Tools*

So open your portfolio, upload or post your stories, verse, articles, plays, essays, images, or whatever your Muse Creative inspires. Then, perhaps, stop in and say hello, introduce yourself and get to know some of your fellow writers and artists both newly arrived and those who've been around awhile.

Open your portfolio, share your vision ~ explore the worlds created by your fellow writers and artists ~ a cool place to visit ~ and stay *Smile*

Ask & Answer

As a guest host, I won't overstay my welcome in your virtual home, but ask that you visit with fellow newcomers and old-timers, enter their worlds of words in verse and prose, and let them know your thoughts. The best way to get a review or comment is to leave one for another. Kind of like extending an invitation to lunch; the invite is returned in kind. *Smile*

Until we next meet along the highways and byways of our Community, I wish you each joy in writing!
