Setting the "Mood"

Everyone has their own way of focusing and preparing. I'll share mine with you, and talk about some things to consider.

So, we all have our own ways of focusing. Some of us want music, and some of us want silence. Some of us need to be in a certain room, some of us need food or drink, and still others of us need to go through a specific routine. All just so we can write.

My routine isn't a routine at all. I just... decide to write, and then I sit down. And I stare at my screen a bit, and I get back up and wander around. There are some very specifc things I need so I will actually stay in my chair.

*Bulletb* Sweet Tea I don't know why, but I need tea. If I have water, soda... anything else, it just won't work. And if the tea is luke-warm, that just won't do, either. It has to be either ice cold, or hot. There is no in between.

*Bulletb* Fuzzy Socks Unless it is summer, fuzzy socks are the bomb. My feet tend to be the first part of me that get cold, so fuzzy socks are both nuzzly and warm and keep me from having to go retrieve a blanket, so I can sit for a longer writing session.

*Bulletb* Ambient Noise It actually doesn't matter what it is, but I have to have SOME kind of noise around me. It can be the television turned down low, or music, or even a particularly loud fan.

*Bulletb* A Snack Jolly Ranchers are pretty much the awesomest thing ever, when it comes to writing. I like the squishy ones, the hard ones... doesn't matter as long as it is jolly and it would take care of cows as a profession. I love them.

*Bulletb* No One Talking to Me If someone is talking to me, I can't write. I simply can't. I guess my brain composing narrative while following a conversation just doesn't work well. Not at all. I get a little snappy, admittedly, when someone is trying to hold a long conversation with me when I am trying to write or read. I have to be conscious enough to put the writing or reading aside, even if I already have the sweet tea and fuzzy socks.

If you have trouble concentrating, here's what you can do to get your OWN routine.

1. Figure out what is distracting you. This is hard to pinpoint, at first. For me, I just really needed to start noticing.

2. Once you figure it out, fix it. If you can't focus with the television or when you have music with words, try without words. If you get hungry or thirsty, make sure you have that handled before you sit down to write. If you get sleepy, take a nap first. If you can't stop thinking about the dishes being undone, finish those. Etc.

3. Write! That's it! Once you have everything settled, your brain shouldn't have anything else to focus on except the writing.

Good Luck!

Ask & Answer

Here are some of the responses I got after "Noticing Newbies Newsletter (July 15, 2015).

eyestar~* said, "Hey Sara jean. This was awesome. The info for newbies was awesome and can even apply to others who may note have known about newsfeeds and fanning! Little things that may not get spoken about or seen for a while in the vastness of more vital things here. Good choices. I realized I had not even fanned SMs and SM! *Shock* I go on Main feed anyway--but thought I had them on favs. LOL see, little things we miss. Thanks for all you do to grab attention. *Thumbsup*"

I am so glad you liked it! It is one of my favorite things about the site, other than the writing, of course.

Sky Watch said, "Ok maybe I'm having trouble finding it but how do you favorite an interactive story?"

On the right side of the screen, there should be a tannish plus sign equally level with the title of the Interactive Story. Click it, and it should favorite it for you. If it already looks like a finger with a string tied on it, or a megaphone, you have already favorited it.
