Letter from the editor

Just like anywhere else, with WdC, experience has thought me to listen to those I'm trying to cater to. That also means that those participating should at least try and understand those who are running the game. I know at least a dozen people who love creating huge activities of various shapes and sizes, and I also understand how much time they put into running something like that. As a host of a gigantic activity, I don't expect answers nor results right away. They have their hands full. Especially, when it's a daily updating activity. It's almost like a full time job. Perhaps some understanding is needed, on both sides.

As a host:

*Starb* You spend a lot of time plotting and creating
*Starb* The activity itself can be very time consuming
*Starb* The rules have to be clear and precise
*Starb* The look of the activity has to be eye catching
*Starb* Double checking everything to make sure you didn't miss anything
*Starb* Having someone look over things - extra set of eyes helps
*Starb* Getting enough help - a lot of members wish to participate only
*Starb* Making sure the rules make sense to others

As a participant:

*Stary* You may not understand all the rules right away
*Stary* The entire activity may be too much for you
*Stary* You expect the host to answer questions as quickly as possible
*Stary* Results must be posted within a reasonable time
*Stary* Lack of communication results in lack of participation

These are just the basics of what one encounters when running a big activity. Not everyone is quick on the trigger. Rules, if too elaborate, may confuse people more than they should. How many times have you heard someone say Don't read too much into it when asking for an explanation of something? Sometimes you can't help it.

I have decided to finish each of my activities with a survey. Since I can't think of everything and glitches happen, I'd like to be more prepared the next time. Asking those who've participated in the activity for their input is a great way of communication. Don't take it personal, no matter what their answers. Be open-minded and understanding in order to learn from it. The goal is to improve the challenge, not make it worse. As a host, you want to know what the improvements could be, and a review here or there may not be enough to do so. On the other hand, as a participant, you should also have some understanding for those who do run activities on a major scale or a daily basis. It isn't easy. A lot of time goes into it. It requires understanding and patience on both sides of the fence to run a successful activity. *Wink*

'til next time!
