As Christopher Walken said (see above), "There is a connection between funny and scary."
Never is that connection more plain than in the preparations for Halloween.
Here in the US (in other countries, your kilometreage may vary), we have "summer" season, when everything is about having fun in the sun - nothing much funny there. Then there's "back to school" season, which is about as far from funny as you can get, because nothing is as scary as going back to school, especially if you're a teacher. Then comes "pumpkin spice" season, which seems to be a celebration for white girls - again, not funny. But then comes Halloween season, followed by Thanksgiving season (not funny). And overlaid on all of that is the gradual buildup, beginning sometime in January, for Christmas season, which is a whole motherlode of material for comedy - but, since we no longer feature Krampus , isn't scary at all.
So until we bring back Krampus (which would be an excellent Kickstarter), the perfect storm of funny and scary takes place in October. Specifically, I've determined that it peaks on October 21, which happens to be the day this newsletter is released into the wild. Neat how that works!
But it says something about the human psyche that, when confronted with the scary, the unknown, the horrific - one of our first impulses is to laugh. Well, after running faster than Usain Bolt, that is. And probably after a shower.
Now, there are lots of ways to play Halloween. The traditional way is pure scary: creatures of the night, the Grim Reaper, kid-eating monsters, candy corn - all the usual hallmarks of the holiday. There's also the masquerade aspect of it - dressing as someone else, such as George Washington or Justin Trudeau (congratulations, Canada, by the way, on ending your long national nightmare, eh), who isn't particularly Linked 'Note' no longer available.Well, unless you're playing George Washington Back From The Dead.. And then there's all the "sexy" costumes, which I think you prepare for by drinking a metric ton of pumpkin spice lattes.
But this is the Comedy newsletter, so we don't do scary, fake or sexy. We just do laughs.
So, in the spirit of what's scary, fake, sexy, and funny, here's my 2015 list of potential Scariest Halloween Costumes - the scariest things I can think of that are also, at least in some circumstances, funny:
 Donald Trump taking the Presidential Oath of Office
(team effort) A black guy getting shot by a cop
Zombie Jesus
A California mudslide (ideally, unrelated to the gastric distress caused by overconsumption of pumpkin spice lattes)
My first ex-wife (you can re-use that vampire costume you have lying around)
An unregistered drone
A pumpkin spice latte
AB InBev
Heights
Note: actually dressing up as any of the above may earn you social ostracism, but it might be worth it for the laughs. |

Last time, in "Sharing" , I discussed... well, I'm sure you can figure it out from the title.
Merry Mumsy  : Yeah, no more sharing the plague when you come to CA. If you wouldn't mind swinging by Canada and picking up a few hundred thousand gallons of water on the way though . . . much appreciated.
"Be careful what you wish for," they say, which has never been more true than it is now for Southern California, land of mudslides.
angelduh: The comments aren't about sharing nut the newsletter was. Maybe they're about last week's. I hope I'm commenting right. But, sharing can be a fault. Some things, you don't share, they're yours. And, people can be horrible in their expectation to share. Good natured things can turn into disease in some people.
So that explains what I brought out of Las Vegas last year. And the comments are usually from a month ago - like this one.
