A Romance/Love Newsletter by Elf

A look at a few different approaches to the Valentine's Day from the perspective of someone who works in retail. Interesting how some get things done weeks in advance while others wait last minute, or for sales after the holiday.

With the romance and love newsletter for this week, it would be almost odd not to mention Valentine's Day, since it's a short time away. Sure, I could talk outside the box on purpose, which has also been done before, but instead, I figure let's talk about the romance holiday.

I work retail so there are a few holidays throughout the year that we put out product for weeks to months in advance. Often the big holidays, like Christmas and Halloween, but not every single one. Yes, we do have Easter stuff already awaiting the end of Valentine's day. One thing that someone comment on this year was an observation they made on who had been purchasing Valentine gifts already and who would probably wait until last minute.

It's a little bit stereotyping, but the observation did entail women picking out things more in advance and some of the men waiting more last minute.

Many different people have bought cards, stuffed animals and even some chocolates (though some of the chocolate purchases are for non-delayed consumption by the one spending the money). Men and women have both bought different things so it's not just all. But there have been some interesting observed moments. Like some of the early birds in particular have been older women who get cards for a variety of reasons. One asked about more cards for grandkids, as an example. I'll work Sunday too so will see who gets their items on the exact day because some of us do procrastinate.

But we can also consider our story characters, whether there is a holiday like Valentine's Day in the story or not. Is there an event or holiday that has certain expectations? Does your character like to get things early? Do they wait until last minute? What is there a reason?

If you want to add a little character conflict, take a character who can't stand last minute shopping and find a reason that forces them into that situation where they need to get it at the very last minute. Or you could have the procrastinator doe things early for a specific reason. Can be a little conflict inducing or make a good practice in character development.

Either way, this week is a good time to write romance. Whether you have a Valentine or not, you could create a romance story. I'll be working on mine this weekend, when I'm not at work selling people heart shaped boxes, chocolate and everything else red or pink for the holiday. *Heart*
