When I was twelve years old, my friend begged me to join a girl’s secret society called Rainbow Girls. Being a little skeptical I thought it sounded silly, but intriguing, since my friend said it was like a junior league Masons for girls.

All I knew about the Masons were they had interesting medallions on their cars. My friend told me I would have to apply to join, be interviewed, and then if accepted, I would be in a secret initiation ceremony in a temple and get to wear a long white gown.

That cinched it. I loved playing princess, even at age twelve. My mother was hesitant about my joining, since we were Catholic, and the Rainbow Girls were known as a Protestant organization; however, she encouraged me to join when she found out the principles of the Rainbow Girls were a service based organization based on the principles of Faith, Hope and Charity. Plus, she figured it would keep me out of trouble!http://www.iorg.org/index.html

I got to wear my long white dress, and the temple was just the local Elks lodge, but I enjoyed the ceremony and the drama. I liked telling my sister I knew the secrets of the Rainbow Girls and she didn’t. It was my own personal secret mystery.

Dan Brown uses secret societies to provide the mystery and drama in his books, Angels and Demons and The DaVinci Code. The antagonists in his books include the Illuminati in Angels and Demons and the Knights Templar in The DaVinci Code. Secret societies are great devices for mystery writing, since they operate behind the scenes and operate under their own rules.

Members of secret societies have hidden agendas, and sometimes powerful members to change politics or religion. George W. Bush is a member of the Skull and Bones club, and Thomas Jefferson was a member of the Flat Hat Club. Other well know secret societies include the Freemasons, the Rosicrucians and the KKK. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secret_society#List_of_secret_societies

Do some research on secret societies with the link above and get started using them for your mystery novels. Who knows? You may write the next The DaVinci Code!
