About This Newsletter

Fantasy Newsletter by Elf

A brief moment inspired by roommates who take part in RPG and how such activities work in the realm of speculative fiction.

Letter from the editor

One of the things I have been asked about over the years of having elfmage7 as my username on this site, and others, has been whether I take part in RPG type events or some of the big fantasy games (card, computer, etc). I do appreciate elves, mages and things they are often found within. However, I have never done RPG or any of the types of games often referenced. My name does not come from those sources. No RPG, Magic the Gathering, Realm or WoW. None of it for this Elf.

On the other hand, my current roommates all RPG and play fantasy type games. Which means some rather interesting things get said around the apartment. If you want to hear random conversations about spells, character details or random yells about things dragons are going, then gamers are great if you can find them.

They are working right now to get characters figured out and things organized for an RPG game, which has led to some interesting conversations. I get to hear about trying to make a gunslinger character work in a more traditional fantasy set up, for example. Then there are the type of spells available along with the different casters. It actually makes me want to try a session, just a little. Okay, I'm more of a write as you go worry about the worldbuilding and character development as you come up type of fantasy writer. But I can see how the beforehand work that goes into these games could also work well with writing speculative fiction.

So, that is my newsletter this time. I'm more just curious what you all thing about the idea of role playing games and how they can be used in writing fantasy stories. Is it something I should try? What do you recommend?

Ask & Answer

Do you take part in any RPG sessions or know someone who does? Have any given you inspiration?

Last time that, in this newsletter I discussed editing and received a few responses on the topic.

Thanks so much for including my Flash "A little light music" in the newsletter. I've been know to struggle with editing so much I ended up completely rewriting something!

- You're welcome. Sometimes a story needs an edit and other times it takes a whole rewrite.

Thanks for the letter. It was encouraging. I rewrote all eight of the chapters of a book I writing and now i have three chapters where I am still in the midst of correcting. I've spent hours editing the first one and I am not done. My advice is to go back and edit as you go along. My basic rule of thumb is to do to edit every five-hundred words or so and clean things up. BTW, could you refer me to a good fantasy editor?

- It can be quite a challenge. The 500 words at a time is an interesting method and probably nice to break it into sections instead of thinking about the bulk for editing. I don't have any editors to recommend. I do my own editing thus far so haven't searched out any others.

Its been 30 years or so since I first wrote this novel. I rewrote it once 15 years or so ago. Now I'm writing it now to get published. Its a hard thing to do.

- It is hard at times but good luck to you.
