About This Newsletter

Hello everyone. I am ~ Santa Sisco ~ . I'm one of the four permanent editors of the Noticing Newbies newsletter.

My aim is to ensure you have a smooth transition into the site. I still remember my first day here. "Bitem?" Do I have to be a computer programmer to put my writing on here? *Laugh* Forty-eight hours later, I realized it was a case of easy when you know how!. My biggest mistake when I joined was that I didn't take the time to read the "Writing.Com 101. I was excited and wanted to do everything the same day. Sound familiar? *Smile*
You will see my contributions every four weeks and I hope they help you with using this great site.

My fellow permanent editors are Brooklyn , ember_rain, and Sara♥Jean .

Letter from the editor

I have received many requests for help over the past few years. One of the most frustrating questions asked is also quite common. “I was looking at a contest yesterday and decided I wanted to enter it today. I can’t remember what it was called, but it was for short stories, and the prompt was something about fishing.” Okay, the subject matter is one I made up, but I get these questions about many activities on WDC. I can usually work with a member and find what they are looking for. I would rather everyone know about favorites, and when to use them.

How do I favorite/fan another member or item?

It is very simple to favorite an item or member.
When you see a member you want to favorite, simply click on the cross at the end of their handle.
~ Santa Sisco ~ *Left* This cross will then turn into a hand which shows you they are a favorite. The member will not know they are a favorite of yours, but you can make them aware by becoming a fan. When you fan someone it becomes public and they will see you in their fan list and in a notification when you fan them. To fan someone all you have to do is click on the white hand that appeared when you made them a favorite. You can double click on a cross to make someone a fan if you haven’t already made them a favorite.
Items/contests/other activities can also be made a favorite or fan. At the top right of any item, beside the printer and Email icons, you will see the cross identical to the one you saw next to my name. It works the same as a member’s cross. One click makes it your favorite, and another click makes you a fan.

Anything or anyone you favorite is only known to yourself. (Private)
Anything or anyone you fan is known to everyone. (Public)

Once you have started to build a list of favorites, I recommend that you organize them. Simple folder names help me, e.g. Contests, writing advice, friends, etc.

How do I access organizing my favorites?

From the left hand control panel:
My Account > Favorites > Scroll to the bottom of the list to > Manage Favorites.

If you have an Upgraded membership, you can also set the favorites list as a popup window.
My Account > Account settings > Site Display Options > My Favorites Launch.

Comprehensive instructions for favorites and fans can be found in "My Favorites and Fans.
I hope this has been clear and informative for any newbies reading this. For any established members reading this, I hope you learned something! *Bigsmile*
