Letter from the editor

Once upon a time... oh, about a year ago now, I was a terrible blogger. I’d start a blog with all the best intentions and then I’d either forget about it completely, or I’d sit there, feeling awkward, wondering why anyone would possibly want to know about my day. My life, I figured, is just not that exciting! Which is also why I don’t do Twitter and hardly ever write a status update on Facebook.

Back in January, though, I returned to the site after suffering from a lengthy writer’s block. And I wasn’t at all convinced that I would be able to write anything even then. I knew I had to be back here, but then what? So, I cleared my old blog and decided to make a fresh start. Blogging, after all, is still writing. It’s still getting some words out there. And that was better than the nothing that had been with me for too long.

Now, in December, I can honestly say that that was one of the best decisions I could have made. Whilst I may not update my blog every single day, it has offered me more than I would have ever thought possible. Like what, you might wonder? Well, for one, it’s brought me friendship.

In February I signed up for "The Soundtrack of Your Life [18+]. I would recommend anyone to sign up for this challenge when it opens back up. The idea behind it is simple – choose songs and write about why you love them. It soon turned into something else – songs trigger memories, and memories help you to open up, and all of a sudden you aren’t writing about your day-to-day stuff but about your good times, and your bad times, and your thoughts and feelings. And you stop by the blogs of other entrants and get to know their good times, bad times, thoughts and feelings. You share laughter and tears – yes, some entries made me cry – and through that friendships form.

In March I joined "Invalid Item . For someone who enjoys writing poetry, I read very little of it. So, sharing a poem a day and expressing my feelings about it wasn’t going to be easy. But that’s why it’s a challenge and I have to say that I learned a lot. It is another challenge that I would truly recommend for anyone with even the smallest interest in poetry.

I joined the "30-Day Blogging Challenge ON HIATUS [13+], where you will receive daily prompts to write to. You can take those wherever you want to. Through that, I think I found my blogging voice. My entries have become more in-depth than they were, and I have explored many different thoughts and feelings.

Sometimes it’s good to let it all out, and I have used the occasional prompt from the "JAFBG [XGC]. We all need to vent from time to time, and we might need a little nudge in order to do so. See, your blog is your personal space. Your corner of the Internet, and of Writing.Com. It’s there no matter what’s going on, no matter what you’re feeling, and it’s very special because of that.

In August, I joined in the annual virtual backpacking trip of the abovementioned 30DBC and that was a highlight of my time on the site. Lasting friendships were formed, and many good memories. Sign up next time! You won’t regret it.

When I look back on my blogging year, I see a lot of progress. As a blogger, as a writer, and as a person in general. My blog tracks the ups and downs I have experienced. There are entries expressing joy and ticked-off entries, and gloomy entries. Again, that’s okay. It’s all part of life’s drama. We’re never constantly happy nor, fortunately, constantly sad.

If I keep this up, I will have a Chronicle of Kit, just like you would have a Chronicle of You. It may be handy for later inspiration, or for if you ever want to write a memoir. Or to just read through, at some point in the future. Time spent blogging is never wasted.

So, if you have ever considered starting a blog, I say go for it. You won’t regret it. Or if you have a blog you currently don’t know what to do with, there are plenty of groups and challenges on the site that can get you started and keep you going.

Good luck!
