Who?
Why?
Aren't you curious as to how?
With each mystery each writer focuses on the who and the why. Who did the crime and the why. The where matters as well. What about the how? Has the victim been murdered with a gun or a knife? Your imagination will share those details with the reader. Is there more to it? How about the medical side of things?
Dexter was the blood spatter analyst for the police who knew how to find the reasons for someone's death. The show Bones deals with finding victims long gone, their bones the only evidence helping to find who the victim was and what happened to them.
In order to add medical mystery to a story, you also have to know what you're talking about. You have to do your research. One cannot simply make a statement such as 'The victim's arms were cut off postmortem,' without knowing the how of it. How does your character know that?
Research could be a bit tough when it comes to this, and some of your family members or friends may get worried when they accidentally see the things you've searched for, but in order to make your writing believable, you have to educate yourself. Having a friend in the medical field does wonders for this particular subject. However, not everyone has access to a person who works in the medical field.
While it is nice to read a good mystery about the reasons why someone murdered another person as well as finding out who did it, reading about how they did it, adds to the mystery itself. Our writing reflects our views, emotions, interests. It feeds our own curiosity. The same goes for your reader. You, with your knowledge, can fill their well of information. We all thirst for knowledge, be it in a mystery book or a medical one, or anywhere else. Share that wealth.
