A New Year, a fresh start... how about a bit of adventure? If you are looking for a challenge, I might just be able to point you in a direction or two.

First of all, I hope that the New Year will be a great one for you all! May it bring you everything you hope and dream for.
Between the holidays, having my sister over for a week, battling the flu and a computer with a tendency to blue-screen, freeze and not recognise my modem, I’ve had quite a bit of adventure in my life lately! Sadly, this also means that I’ve had little or no time to write my Editorial this month. Even trying to start up Word to write this Newsletter has taken me seven attempts, a frozen computer, more error messages than I liked to count and a shaky restart. Ah, the joys of the Internet.
I could not leave you without an Editorial, though. So how about some adventure? There's plenty of that to be found, right here on Writing.Com. There are some amazing events going on currently, challenging a writer to explore new territory.
I’ve heard several people say that they think they are not good enough to take part in big events. We tend to be our own worst critics. Entering a competition that allows you to be creative and challenges you to try something new is a lot of fun and a learning experience. The Decathlon, in which I have competed a couple of times, got me to write in genres and forms which I might never have dared to try if I had not joined. And I was amazed that the words started flowing and that I had such a good time!
WDC Poetry RAW, another fine example, inspires the writer to reach deep within themselves and put their emotions onto paper. Not always easy, I admit, but so very rewarding.
Even if you don’t get past the first few rounds in an event, you will have gained that bit more experience, some great new items in your port, probably made a few new friends and read some amazing items in the process.
And the experience gained can be applied to your other works and might inspire some fresh ideas.
Have a bit of adventure, I dare you. It’s worth it.

scribbler  - I liked the new take on the footsteps in a dark alley sequence, shake it up a bit and you've got a whole new story. I'd also like to agree with WD wilcox, action is all well and good but adventure, now there's something I can really sink my teeth into.

boomaboom - I look forward to your thoughts on the action/adventure genra. Do you think that you could put in something about proper settings for a story of this type?

Justice - Thanks for a great newsletter. It's still hard for me to think of Action/Adventure as a separate genre, since it seems so integral to the others. I find myself working through the same types of sequences in horror or drama.
One thing I'd like to hear more about it your thoughts on outcome. To me, one of the keys to understanding motive is understanding that the outcome emans something. If it doens't change the character in any way, I feel like I'm watching a bad video game and simply racking up survival points. One of my favorite action movies is Die Hard because the protag had to suffer to succeed. For fantasy, it came out in the final haul up Mt. Doom with Frodo and Sam.
This is another interesting suggestion for a Newsletter Editorial. I fully agree with you - the outcome of a story is crucial to the satisfaction a reader gets from a book or story. Thank you so very much for the feedback and suggestion!
