About This Newsletter

Drama Newsletter by Dawn

This time I ramble about stress in our lives as writers and how we use stress to create drama in our stories, whether fictional or not so pretend.

Stress is a common experience as we all deal with it in various points in our lives. It can be both helpful and harmful, depending on various factors according to the many speeches I had to listen to in high school as it was very popular one year to pick stress as a speech topic. Writing can be a factor when it comes to the situation of stress as well since we can use writing to help relieve stress, or having to come up with drama topics can be the source of our current stress, depending on the situation.

Our characters probably have a lot of stress too due to all of the different dramatic issues going on in their worlds/lives. Since this newsletter is specific to drama, this works as well topic wise because the drama that we create in our stories probably causes stress for the characters. Some more so than others, as with the varying stories there will be conflict more intense in certain stories in comparison to others. Saving the galaxy might be a little more stress inducing than trying to ask that girl out on a date, as one example.

In many ways, how we create the drama in these stories and for the genre does relate to stress. By putting our characters in those situations, by giving them drama, we are in fact causing them stress and that's okay in order to create the story.

Writing it can be stress-inducing or relieving as well. If you have a deadline with a story, that can be a cause for a little stress. That also can be the driving force in order to get anything done, so maybe it's not such a bad thing to have a little bit of stress and drama from worrying about missing said deadline. What we write can also cause a little drama depending on the type of stories and who asks. Some genres are a little easier to talk about with say our parents or siblings than others, though drama is probably okay for any... though, depends on what causes the drama I suppose.

And for more stress relief, either from the cathartic factor or just the escape from ones current reality, reading these stories can be helpful too. Sometimes, when getting a little stressed, it's nice to take a little break and read. That can be a flash fiction piece online or even a published book, the exact details on the item are not always a big factor. Just getting to experience the written word and the story developed on the pages/screen are what can help as I try to ignore the 40 hour work weeks, newsletters and reviews to do and maybe that studying since there might be a test in the near future. So many different stresses in our lives, not even counting family (lol) and reading or writing can be a helpful escape.

How do you create stress in your stories? Do you use reading or writing in order to get relief from stress? Oh the drama that is caused by stress on a daily basis. It's all there and ready to be explored whenever we decide to put these situations into words on the page. Now, I should write to relief some pre-work stress... or maybe I should behave and study. What are you doing? *Wink*

Ask & Answer

What do you do to create stress for your character? or Do you find writing stressful?

Last time I wrote for this newsletter, back in July, I discussed doing things on a Friday night (despite my lack of ever doing much except maybe work).

Comment by Quick-Quill
I'm usually closing at the retail store I work on FRI. I love Saturdays if Hubby's home we might see a movie if any are good. If not he watches TV and I crash or hit my fav writing site WDC.

- Ah yes, the retail life. I used to work all weekend long but currently have Saturday's off. Still work Friday and Sunday though but the times can vary depending on how they do the schedule. I'm just all kinds of weekend fun, lol.
