Letter from the editor

Most people don't think twice about quotations, their meanings, or the effect they can have on a person. They're simple things, yet they're so much more!

While WdC has its own Quotation Inspiration Official Contest, many others like to use a quote here or there to spark a writer's inspiration. Many are thought provoking and can give off a positive vibe. They can teach you to believe in yourself, to trust yourself, and to trust your own written word without question.

How many times did the thought cross your mind that your writing is mediocre? Or that it's not worth publishing? Or even reading? So why bother writing it, right? Wrong! Self-doubt is the worst. Anyone else contributing to it makes things unbearable. You have to stay positive in order to be able to trust yourself to write, and write good. Even if you write for yourself and only want to share it here with us, you still require the necessary confidence to do so.

Do any quotes inspire you to think positive? To change your life? The way you look at things? Yes? No?

Here are a few of my own favorites that inspire me.

You must stay drunk on writing so reality cannot destroy you.
~ Ray Bradbury

More often than not, a writer is also a dreamer - big or small. We tend to create our own worlds inside our heads. Not all of them get to be shared on paper or a WdC page, but some receive that privilege. This helps cope with whatever you're dealing with at that time. No one can stay sane by constantly thinking about problems. Staying drunk on writing or in your own escape world, helps us cope with things better. Positive thinking, even if it may be beyond your reach at that time.

If there's a book you really want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it.
~ Toni Morrison

I love this quote! Have you ever read a book and wished it'd continue? Or that the ending was different? Or any of the other million possibilities out there but you haven't found such book? It's the simplest yet truest of quotes. If you want to read it, then you have to write it. However, there isn't a drop of pressure or self-doubt in that quote which might tell you that you cannot accomplish such feat.

Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.
~ Anton Chekhov

The best quote and explanation about show vs. tell. Not a single person wants to be told to imagine, they want it explained in a picture of words. They want to float on your brilliant imagination as if it were their own.

A writer is someone who can make a riddle out of an answer.
~ Karl Kraus

This, to me, will forever be the toughest quote to bring to life. Creating a mystery out of something you already know the answer to isn't as easy as it sounds, unless you're writing about crime.

I love being a writer. What I can't stand is the paperwork.
~ Peter De Vries

Definitely a quote we can all relate to at times and laugh at. Writing isn't easy. It's hard work, sweat, and tears, where a lot of doubt comes into it. The fear of failure is real and constant. Once you teach yourself to cross that threshold, the rewards are plentiful. All you must do is dare!

The most important things about quotes, other than helping you to stay positive and teach you a thing or two down the line, is the fact that you're not alone out there. All of us fear the same thing and doubt ourselves at every corner. Sometimes we don't have that steady rock to lean on for support, that one person who trusts in our writing, who supports us no matter what. That is why you have to trust in yourself. Think positive to be positive, to stay positive.

'Til next time!
