To me, crime and the mystery of it, is a rather simple concept. Even if you as a reader are trying to find the clues and understand the murderer or are trying to figure out the reasons why they did it, it's still simple. Perhaps it's just me and the way I like things, which is complicated. Without going into much detail, the simpler things are, the more bored I get. My mind craves a challenge.
Mixing genres is always a plus. I didn't fall in love with mystery until I had this newsletter handed to me and The StoryMaster said "Give it a try!" It wasn't one issue of the newsletter, it was a whole year. Twelve tries to tell writers how to write in a genre I never before used myself. A serious lesson indeed and a very long learning curve. Yet, the more I thought about it, the more I realized, I've read more mystery than I thought I did. Not only did I read it, but I've enjoyed it, even craved it. The only difference, the main genre of my reading lists had been and probably always will be, romance.
"The Trickster " is a story I always wanted to continue. It's a mystery with romance twisted in it. I reversed the genres yet included both because to me, one doesn't go without the other. That's just my twisted thinking. I'm a romantic at heart, which some people are finally finding out about me. 
In the end, it is up to you if you want to stick mainly with one genre, but the prospect of a good mix, is and always will be better. You may not think so, you might have some trouble mixing different genres together, but down the road you will attract more readers with your genre mix. Some may enjoy your writing overall, but most will be hooked because of the combination. It creates a new territory for the reader, as well as you as a writer. You will never know the outcome of a story and they may never be predictable. Isn't that exactly what you want? For your readers to always be on their toes? For them to be surprised at the twists and turns you create? Different genres give you more opportunities but also plenty of possibilities. You aren't restricted. Your imagination is free to go in any direction it wishes and the reader will enjoy the ride because they'll be sitting on the edge of their seat wondering what will come next.
If you are strictly a mystery writer, step outside your comfort zone and try adding a genre you never thought of using, even if you think you won't be good at it. The results might surprise you.
