A look at whether or not the main character thinks about their first kiss much before it happens. What affects whether it's something that comes across their radar or not can vary with each story and character.

The first kiss can be an important part of a story for a character and it's a topic that I imagine has been discussed in a number of Romance/Love newsletters over the years. Whether it's just the first kiss for the couple or the character's first kiss with anyone, it can be an important scene within a romance story. While not every story is going to include the very first time the main character, or love interest, has ever been kissed, that first one is what I want to focus on for this newsletter.
More specific, this isn't about the paragraph surrounding the kiss or when it happens exactly. Instead, I want you all to consider what the character thinks about when it comes to their potential first time. Does your character think about it at all before it happens? Or, does it happen and they later reflect upon the situation? What do they think about when it comes to their first kiss?
As is often the case, I'm asking since I'm working on a couple of YA novels that include romance story lines and the question of their first kiss comes up. However, I also write boy point of view, which means I have to consider how much the main character would actually think about something like this. If I have them think too much over the issue of kissing, then it might come off unrealistic and these are even contemporary so need to feel somewhat real.
So, when asking how often a character should think about something like the kiss, I have an answer that is common with many questions in the writing world. The answer is: it depends.
Take one I'm rewriting. I do have a boy who is going to think about a first kiss a little more often than most high school boys. However, he also reads romance novels, regency in particular. A fair amount of conflict revolves around his liking "girl" things and not being the most masculine, so it's more realistic for him to have the subject on his mind more often. His basketball playing best friend, however, is not as concerned over any first kiss beyond questioning over his friend one time because he has a crush on him.
Every character is going to be different. Even girls are different. Get someone who follows more of the "typical" teen mentality and you get thoughts of first kisses on a regular basis, particularly if you're writing them in a story with romance as a focus. Get a character more like me and well, it wasn't on my thought process much nor is it even as an adult. People have different things they focus on even as teenagers and so should our characters.
But it is romance and a kiss is a big moment. And there is an issue of balance too. Have them think about it too much and the kiss may become a distraction, unless the conflict/story is centered around the first kiss, then it might come up in thought more often.
Rambling aside about this topic, for the most part I'm curious what everyone else is doing with their stories. Do you have a character's first kiss in a story? What do they think about the topic? Write one and let us know.

Does your character think about their first kiss before it happens?
Last time, back in the end of November I wrote about how small the world can seem despite the physical distance involved. It was about close encounters and how people come together, in a very quick form. Here are the two comments sent in from that newsletter:
