Some weeks ago I talked about originality in my newsletter and how it's hard to find it, to see it, to think it, yet times are changing as are the generations that come after us. Nevertheless, we who write have trouble coming up with that original story to pave the way for others. We've had Fifty Shades of Grey and that seems to stop right there. The post apocalyptic stories are good because they have the opportunity to come up with a conclusion to an ending which hasn't happened yet. They can twist it whichever way they want. We've seen and read the Hunger Games, Divergent series, The 100. All new things we enjoy reading/watching.
One thing I've noticed lately is the reboots of old shows, old movies. Genre doesn't even matter. It's the fact that we've stepped into the age of electronics, high speed internet and that everything is available to us at a simple touch of a button. Almost scary and yet I find something lacking when it comes to people's imagination.
I rented some movies recently, Downsizing and Ferdinand. In my mind, the movie Downsizing brought on a different world, a new type of future, however farfetched it might be. An interesting subject to be explored. As much as I wanted to like the movie I found myself disliking the end - I don't want to give away any spoilers by saying more - but I felt saddened. Ferdinand on the other hand was cute. Far from the original story, but it had its funny moments as well as sad ones. I saw the need to change it up a bit, but I also remember the old movie, the story my dad told me before I ever saw it on television and that's the version I hoped for.
Sometimes, we get our hopes up, I guess.
Other story lines don't disappoint however simple they may be. The Ranch. Hubby and I heard so much praise about that show that we ended up binge watching all four seasons. It's unique as it is simple and funny. The scariest part? I've seen my in-laws in that show. I felt as if someone had watched and observed them for years and made the show based on them. The first few episodes were eerie that's how similar the characters are. After a while the story drifted in the opposite direction, but the main three characters' behavior still the same.
Now you're wondering what my point is in all this, right? Well, I found that simplicity can go a long way and perhaps some people have a limited imagination no matter how far they take their story, how much they invent. Change is imminent in this world. It's happening as you read these words yet I feel that somehow it's being missed, ignored, overlooked. We seem to look too far ahead of us rather than at the things in front of us. The future is now. Use it to your advantage.
