About This Newsletter

It all began with an announcement on the Newsfeed.-- the cutest little book darts in the most adorable tin.

And my mind started making up stories ...

Letter from the editor

Dear Reader,

Yep, so those book darts. They're cute themselves, and then imagining fifty of them in that cute WDC tin got my creative juices flowing.

So -- they're alive, see. Those darts. And there's a hierarchy, in that tin. There's a Queen Dart, and a King Dart and a Princess and Prince Dart, and all the Courtier Darts ... and the People Darts. And you think you pick a dart at random to mark your page, but oh, no you don't! *Bigsmile*

What happens is, the Queen Dart reads your thoughts, and she knows which book you are reading. She knows which page you're going to mark. And her darts don't just mark the page, they don't. They hold the thought, too. And they encourage you to pick the book up again, soon.

So, the Queen Dart allots a specialist dart, who knows about the subject you're reading on, to hold your page, and your thought, for you. And to tempt you to pick up the book again when you next have leisure. If you're reading a detective story, she'll pick Dart Sherlock. If thou art reading something in olde English, she'll probably pick William Shakesdart. If you're reading something by Alexandre Dumas, she'll pick d'Artagnan. You get my drift. The Dart has to have knowledge and passion for the subject being read.

When you reach in to the tin, your fingers are directed to the chosen dart. You pick it, and mark your page and the line you've halted at. It's when you close the book and put it down that the action really starts there.

The dart starts absorbing the thoughts, first on that page, then in the surrounding chapter, and then in the whole book. And the dart stores these thoughts and processing them, fitting them in with other thoughts they have already absorbed from other books.

Then, when you touch the dart again, to resume your reading, the dart transmits this information from your fingertips directly to your brain. You have an 'aha' moment -- the book is suddenly connected to all the other books you've read on the subject!

This happens with every book on every subject you ever read ... and the darts get more and more knowledgeable the more you use them ...

*Delight*

To summarise what I did there:
1. Took a object -- in this case, something that those who are following the newsfeed are familiar with
2. Made it come alive
3. Gave it a community to live in
4. Gave it some special powers
5. Included 'you' in the story
6. Attempted some humour

Hope you enjoyed it!

That's just what I'm struggling to do in my new novel. After reading how the Chinese were treated in the WEST I feel they were just as much a victim as the African were. They, however do not carry the victim mentality. I want to show their strength and ingenious way of surviving in a culture that hated them just because they were different.
