Letter from the editor

Are you playing Christmas songs yet? Put on the old DVDs? Watching something festive on Netflix? I’m writing this newsletter whilst checking out The Christmas Chronicles. It’s quite fun so far. The premise might not be that original – Christmas is in trouble and needs saving – but the reindeer are cute and it’s given me a few smiles already.

I don’t know about you, but despite my attempts at getting into the seasonal spirit, I am far from ready for the holidays. Just today I have written the majority of my cards and tried my very best to keep the neighbour’s cat out of the box of goodies I’m preparing for my sister, her partner and my little niece. I was, of course, unsuccessful, because cats and cardboard boxes are a thing that no human can get in the way of. Tomorrow I plan on taking my parcels and cards to the post office, and I can already hear the grumbling of those who’ll end up waiting behind me. I’ve got a lot of things to send.

I’ve still got to do all my wrapping. Worse than that, I haven’t got a Christmas tree, nor do I have any decorations. One of my neighbours, on the other hand, has some kind of festive laser gadget in her windowsill that’s beaming a wide variety of patterns across the street and right through my kitchen and bathroom windows, which is... interesting.

I had this crazy idea of making at least four varieties of chocolate truffles, and was smart enough to begin buying the chocolate for those in advance. Except, that chocolate’s vanished. Right into my tummy. It’s fair to say that my diet isn’t going well.

Several items that are intended to be gifts haven’t arrived yet. I guess that there are still a couple of weeks left, so I don’t need to feel concerned, but it’d be nice to have everything here. A couple of those items were purchased on Black Friday and Cyber Monday; it’s not as though I left them until the last moment.

Sometimes I wonder why I bother doing stuff for Christmas. I don’t have children. Santa never brought me any gifts. Whilst I believe in God, I am not exactly religious. I remember going to Christmas Eve mass with my grandmother when I was a kid. She was a member of the choir, and I loved hearing her sing, and to watch all the trees in front of the windows on the drive back. But those times are long gone.

Still, it’s a special time of the year, isn’t it? Whether you’re religious or not, whether you have memories of Santa bringing you gifts or not, there’s something in the air, kind of like humanity’s taking a deep, collective breath, waiting for that day when everything just... feels better. We know it won’t last. We know that life will go on as normal once it’s over. But for a moment, there’s hope, and a greater level of goodwill than usual. I think we need that.

Or maybe I’m just weird. If that is the case, so be it. Next week, I’m planning on making a Christmas wreath as part of a community fundraiser. On Christmas day, my neighbours and I will be sharing food, and we’ve invited someone who’s new to the village. If I manage to make my truffles instead of eating the next batch of chocolate I pick up, I’ll be sharing them out amongst friends and neighbours. If I can’t get a tree, I might pick up one of those tiny ones, and plant it in the garden after the new year. I’ll get there.

How are your preparations going? If you’re still busy, like me, don’t worry! I bet you’ll get there, too. *Heartv*
