A good friend of mine once said, "Once we reach a particular age, dating is like going to a used car lot. We're all damaged to some degree; It is just a matter of learning to see the beauty, despite the dings." Our scars may be physical, others emotional, and some may be deeper than others, but we all have them. No matter what level of healing we are at, these things are a part of us, and for any romance to thrive, these things too need to be accepted by the other.
We are all shaped by our individual journey in life. Through those experiences, we gain knowledge, but we also acquire baggage that makes us well rounded imperfect humans. These Imperfections are as much a part of our uniqueness as our assets are. When these same flawed aspects are added to characters in literature, they become more real and relatable. They come alive on the pages, and we connect to their story.
When it comes to the romance genre, sometimes flaws can be what brings characters together. Other times these qualities are what cause drama within the plot, and in the overcoming, they find that one person who is right for them. Although, my favorite is when the perceived flaw by the majority is actually what intrigues the admirer. Both characters might have a mental illness or mental disability that makes them quirky by most people's standards, but they are perfect together. Like, for example, in the movie Benny and Joon, neither character succumbs to societal norms. When I watch that movie and approach the scene where they are making grilled cheese sandwiches on the ironing board with an iron, I always get the warm fuzzies.
