Letter from the editor

Physical Attraction: Chemical Bonding

As this is my very first newsletter I thought we could go back to the basics and follow on from where Red Writing Hood <3 started in her newsletter on the 6th April.

In her Newsletter Red Writing Hood <3 talked about the types of love and how over time love can change, I would like to go a little deeper and ask the question what is love?

We have all experienced love in some way shape or form, whether it is the love of our parents, a friend, sibling, boyfriend/girlfriend, pet, lover, husband or wife even an inanimate object can be loved. We all know that as human beings we can feel an attachment to someone or something else that we express a love for it or them, so how do we fall in love in the first place.

In a recent study by Helen Fisher of Rutgers University in New Jersey our biochemistry is the reason for us falling for love and gives three stages to the love process.

Stage one: Lust.
Inside our bodies our hormones, oestrogen and testosterone fire up and you are soon on the lookout for a suitable partner, it seems as our bodies develop a basic need takes over to find a partner primarily to parent our children. Scientists have discovered that subconsciously we are looking for the right genes in another person so that we can pass these on to our children.

Stage two: Attraction.
In this stage it seems our bodies truly go on a rampage, outwardly we experience clammy hands, sweating, daydreaming, racing hearts, some lose their appetites, others are sleepless have butterflies in their tummy or other such symptoms that we all associate with falling in love. Inside our bodies more chemicals are at work, adrenalin, dopamine and serotonin kicks in.

Stage three: Attachment.
In this final stage the initial attraction gives way to a bonding, our bodies release Oxytocin and Vasopressin both important in the bonding of a couple and linked to the bond between mother and child at birth.

We notice that in all these stages there has been no mention of emotional attachment at all, could it be possible that our hormones are the only explanations for falling in love or do our emotions play some part? That is a question I would like to throw out this week and in next months newsletter I will talk more on the emotional side taking any feedback into account before I go on to discuss why we write about love and the effects it has on us as readers.
