A poem describing a man who neglects his family and tries to repent.
Before It’s Too Late…

Upon his deathbed, the old man lay
Thinking of things he could not say
For the time had come and gone for him
His eyes grew heavy, the lights grew dim
And there he thought about his past
On this lonely day that would be his last
He remembered his family, his wife, and his kids
His mother and father and all that they did
But his selfishness ruined his perfect life
He betrayed his children and his wife
He went to jail for several years
And through the painful nights of tears
Eventually he could not cope
And thus began to give up hope
His family’s letters went unread
He completely blocked them from his head
And on the eve of his release
He was finally free but not at peace
For he could not face his family again
And explain how selfish he had been
For his wife, his daughter, and his son
Had all been killed in a hit and run
His parents had passed from old age
But he didn’t know ‘cause in his cage
He thought of no-one but himself
As he tossed unread letters on his shelf
So there he lay alone and sad
Thinking about all that he once had
Regretting the things that he had done
Living his life for himself as one
And as he lay dying he thought out loud
“I wish I would’ve told them they made me proud”
“And said I loved them despite their hate”
Then the old man was silent, it was too late
