This is for all the creatures who have come to live with us, whether they wanted to or not
It was exactly at this time of year,
rainy October, but nothing to fear
until looking outside my eyes did spy
a wretched creature, more wet than dry.

My husband, an animal lover thru and thru
did his best at a good hearted rescue.
He tried and tried, but to no avail,
every attempt led to one more fail.

So we finally called a special friend
who loaned us something in the end
that would catch this creature in its tracks,
something called a "Have A Heart" trap.

We loaded this ugly wired contraption
hoping we would soon get some action.
Keith put cat food in this cage,
I added leaves so he wouldn't be afraid.

We quickly dashed back in the house
to wait and watch as quiet as a mouse.
In a little time he made his move,
dashed into the cage to grab some food.

Snap went the door, quickly down to the floor,
flash scrambled the cat right out with a roar!
"Oops!" said I as Keith stared in confusion.
He didn't know I'd put leaves for illusion!

"What happened here?" he asked in dismay
"The leaves in the door helped him get away!"
So we cleared off the leaves and added more food
then ran for the house and got back in our groove.

And we watched again from our hiding space
hoping against hope he would now take the bait.
Our patience, at last, did finally score.
Clang went the trap and he let out a roar!

This poor little creature, a wild little kitten,
was frightened and terrified beyond all condition.
Silently praying that he was not hurt
we ran to the cage and uncovered the dirt.

Into the house to the bathroom we went,
"Don't open this door, not even to vent!"
Slam went the door with Keith locked inside
with a creature that screamed like a banshee had died!

For three hours I listened to indescribable noise,
the crashing and howling from out of the void!
At last all was quiet, not a peep did I hear.
Then finally I said "Is everything clear?"

"Yes," came the answer as calm as could be.
"Open the door slowly, creep in and see."
I did as instructed and sat on the seat
across from the bathtub where there sat dear Keith.

And snuggled quite happily, purring away
was sweet little Boris, who moved in that day!
