What goes on in guys heads
Jenn couldn't sleep. she fluffed her pillow for the thousandth time, tried moving to different positions, and pulled the blankets snugly around her. Nothing. Frustrated, she rolled over and looked at her boyfriend, Mark. She watched him resting peacefully.
"Are you sleeping?"
"No," Defense Mechanism One kicked in, born from years of sleeping in school.
Mark pulled the sheets tighter.
"I love you"
"...love you." For this Defense Mechanism Two earned a couple of high fives.
Jenn smiled.
"I've noticed you don't invite me to your softball games. If it were me, I would want you there. I can't be that embarrassing? Don't you agree?"
Three took note of the slight pause in conversation. Time to feign interest.
"Uh-huh."
That was good. Too good. Three put his feet on the control panel and kicked it into autopilot.
"Good then you should invite me more places.?
"Uh huh."
"And while we are on the subject, I think you should come to more of my tournaments. Just because I'm a girl, doesn't mean we can't play sports just as well. I really think you look down on women's sports."
"Uh huh"
"Are you listening to me?"
"Uh huh"
"What did I just say?"
Code red. One and Two looked at each other, neither knowing what to do. Three jumped ship to avoid the fallout of what was coming. Two in his panic, used a prior decoy.
"...love you?"
Mayday! Mayday! Mark came was left alone on the bridge. I t would take a miracle. As for God he had better things to do.
"You were complaining about...the bus?"
Hiroshima.
"No! you never listen to me! Am I that boring? Do you just use me for my body? Sometimes I think I am just speaking to hear my own voice."
"Sorry, sorry." Mark said, suddenly very awake. "I want to listen. I just misheard you. Repeat the first sentence."
"I've noticed that you..."
"Never invite you to softball games, and you think I don't respect women's sports," the little black box in his head kicked in, as it had in so many tests, academic or otherwise.
"OK." Jenn was appeased for the moment.
She curled up next to him and laid her head upon his chest. The two lay there in silence. Mark tried staying awake, he honestly did. He felt he was safe after the seven minute mark. Slowly he closed his eyes.
"You know your chest is more comfortable than Terrence's was. It's bigger and there is a nice spot for my head."
The crew reassembled on the deck. Just as Three was about to speak, Mark tackled him. He couldn't mess this one up. Time for a well placed metaphor, sophistication gives the illusion of alertness, he thought.
"Some books are bigger because the have indexes and appendixes..."
It was at this point Three got up and punched Mark. The thought was gone.
" I just don't know." Three pinned Mark down and Two bound his and gagged him.
"Are you sleeping again?"
"No," One said.
"Good"
One, Two, and Three dragged Mark down to the lower decks to a big closet marked Subconscious. Having disposed of the enemy, they assumed full control of the bridge. the time had come to party. Everyone, from the conscious to the repressed, was invited. Libations were poured for the masses.
"...so then Janet asked if you were ever going to ask to marry me"
"Janet is hot." subconsious though 157 said.
"What!"
"...marry me?" a slightly tipsy Two said.
"Do you mean it?" Jenn squealed.
"Uh huh" three grabbed control.
"I can't beleive this! Yes! Yes! I will marry you! we Can get married in the spring. I have to find a dress.."
"Uh huh," Three said, again kicking it into autopilot. this time it went unnoticed.
"Janet can be my bridesmaid, and we can get purple lilacs and floral arrangement..."

Mark awoke early. he propped himself up and turned to Jenn. She was still slumbering peacefully. spread across her face was one of the hugest grins imaginable. She almost glowed. God she was beautiful. Must have said something right, he thought to himself.
"Good job guys," he said as he lay back down.
