Introduction. Two kids wonder what it is about that house...
Matt Jenkins didn't know what was in the house down at the end of Buffalo Lane, although he'd heard rumors. Rumors of kids who'd gone into that house...and never come out. Their parents moved away, and they passed into a legend. The stories, and the house, had been there as long as anyone could remember.
None, save for old Mr. Mortimer, could remember a time when the house had been occupied. He said back when he was very young, it had been a house where there were always parties and events. He said his mother had been invited to them more often then not, and he said that the food had been wonderful, the music splendid, and the games were beyond description.
Now, the house lay in disrepair, its majestic roof and gables sagging into themselves, the paint faded and chipped. Yet, no one had ever thrown rocks at the windows, no one had ever broken into that house. It seemed to have an enchantment all its own. No one, not even thieves and others of a less than savory nature would dare go near that house. There was something about it, as if an invisible barrier haunted the air…and Matt wanted to find out.
After school one beautiful morning in July, he and his best friend Josh Kelley went to Mr. Mortimer to get every bit of information they could extract, although in the end they didn't get too much. Just the fact that the house had always been...special somehow, when he was a kid. So, they figured they only had a few options left. Observe the house for awhile, find out if anything strange was going on, and if nothing turned up....go in.
